Volleyball Wins MEC Opener in Sweep of Battlers

PHILIPPI, W. Va. - The Frostburg State volleyball team picked up a sweep in their first Mountain East contest this year against Alderson Broaddus Tuesday night, 3-0 (25-18, 25-6, 25-12).
After dropping the first two points of the first set, the Bobcats would score three straight after a kill from sophomore Beverly Braun, an ace from sophomore AJ Thompson, and a block by junior McKaily Thomson-Moran to take a 3-2 lead. Kills by freshman Joie Allen and senior Edwyna Lainez knotted the set up at 6-6. Thomson-Moran and Allen would both demolish kills by the Battlers on a block and then sophomore Jenna Gossard would sneak in an ace to give FSU a 10-8 lead. After AB would tie it at 10-10, Braun went on her own run and got back-to-back kills, followed by an ace from senior Bianca Smalls and another kill by Thompson to take a 16-11 lead. The Battlers would battle back to keep it close, but junior Katie Keech would contribute three monster kills and Thompson would rack up two blocks and a kill to seal the victory for Frostburg, 25-18.
FSU would dominate set two as they started off with three straight points via two AB miscues and a kill from Braun to lead 3-0. Frostburg would take advantage of the Battler miscues and play phenomenal defense en route to a 25-6 victory. Sophomore Fiona Gonzalez-Medina racked up 12 service points in the winning effort and was stellar in her defensive play. Keech would add three kills and a block, while Allen would added a pair of kills as well.
Set three would go much like set two, as Braun contributed four kills, as Lainez and Thompson would combine for seven service points to give the Bobcats an 11-2 lead. Braun, Thomson-Moran, Allen, and Keech would all blast kills by AB defenders for the rest of the set to cruise to a 25-12 victory and secure a match sweep.
Lainez led the charge for Frostburg as she recorded 16 assists and 12 digs. Gonzalez Medina recorded 18 digs, Braun tallied 11 kills, and Allen racked up seven kills in the victory.

With the win, Frostburg moves to 13-4 overall and 1-0 in MEC play and Alderson Broaddus drops to 5-5 and receives their first loss in MEC action (0-1). The Bobcats will be back in action Friday, September 23 on the road at Wheeling in another big conference matchup. For more information on Frostburg Athletics visit www.frostburgsports.com.
