WHEELING, W. Va. – The Frostburg State volleyball team fell to Wheeling on the road Friday evening, losing three sets to none (25-10, 25-9, 25-17).
The first set of the match did not go in favor of the Bobcats. After falling behind 3-0 to start the game, FSU picked up a point off a Cardinal service error. Sophomore McKaily Thomson-Moran found a rhythm midway through the set with three kills off of assists from senior Edwyna Lainez. The Bobcats had a four-point run at the end of the set, capped off with an ace from Lainez, though the final score of the set was 25-10 Wheeling.
FSU took the first two points of the second set and exchanged points with the Cardinals making the set 4-4. Wheeling went on a seven-point run to break away from the Bobcats. Sophomore AJ Thompson had a kill and an ace to score the last points for Frostburg in the set, as Wheeling took the set by a score of 25-9.
The Bobcats came out with a new fire in the third set, determined to push the match further. Three straight FSU kills got things started with an early 3-1 lead. Neither team could put more than two points together until a four-point run pushed Wheeling into a 9-7 lead. The Bobcats answered with a four-point run of their own, two of which came from Thompson. The hard fought third by the Bobcats would come up short on a strong showing from the Cardinals with a final score in the third set of 25-17.
The Bobcats now have a record of 13-5 on the year and are 1-1 in MEC play, while Wheeling now sits at 8-6 and 2-0 so far in conference play. Frostburg will return to play when they host Notre Dame (Ohio) on Tuesday September 27 for a 7 PM start. For up-to-date information please visit
