GAME NOTES
-LAST TIME OUT FOR FSUÂ Â
-Frostburg State picked up a week two win at home against West Virginia State in a contest that stayed relatively quiet until the fourth quarter. WVSU would find themselves up 7-0 at halftime and would hold the lead at 7-3 after three quarters when junior K Dayne Koontz would make a 36-yard field goal. Moving into the 4th quarter trailing, the Bobcats would put together a winning performance. Koontz would once again break through the uprights with a 22 yard field goal making it 7-6 WVSU and later, redshirt freshman Sean Aaron would score the Bobcats first touchdown by rushing 13 yards for the score late in the fourth making it 12-7 FSU. Koontz would work to preserve the lead, tacking on two more field goals of 28 and 35 yards, giving the Bobcats an 18-7 victory. The Bobcats have now started three of their last five seasons off by going 2-0.
-SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLESÂ Â
-Charleston took part in arguably week two's most entertaining contest by defeating Fairmont State on Thursday night 40-38 in four overtimes. UCWV would find themselves up 21-7 at the half, but Fairmont State would fight back, scoring the touchdown to tie the game at 28-28 with around a minute left in the fourth. Charleston would score first in overtime one with a 1 yard touchdown run, and Fairmont would answer with the same scoring play in overtime two making it 35-35. Following the trading of 25 and 36 yard field goals, the score would sit at 38-38. After the first round of two point conversions failing between the two teams, the fourth overtime would see Charleston force Farimont State to fail again trying to score, and a quick throw into the back of the end zone gave the Golden Eagles a 40-38 victory.Â
-CHARLESTON (WV) HEAD COACHÂ
-Quinn Sanders took over the UCWV program on March 1, 2022 after the departure of previous HC Pat Kirkland for a Special Teams Coordinator position at FCS Jacksonville State this offseason. Sanders has been with the program since Spring 2021, where he would take over as the Offensive Coordinator for a squad that would go on to win the MEC South Division. Prior to this, Sanders would also work with the Wide Receivers for UCWV beginning in 2015 after having a short stint as an intern with the Golden Eagles working with the Quarterbacks and Running backs.
-SETTING NEW RECORDSÂ
-Eric Wagoner became only the second Head Coach in FSU history to open their first season going 2-0, joining former HC DeLane Fitzgerald (2014-2021) who defeated Geneva 24-19 and Shenandoah 20-10 in his first two contests with the Bobcats.Â
-WEEK TWO MEC HONORS
-Koontz, a junior K/P from Hampstead, Md., connected on 4-of-4 field goal attempts during Frostburg State's win over West Virginia State on Saturday. He kicked field goals of 26, 22, 28 and 35 yards during the victory and accounted for 12 of Frostburg's 18 points in the game. Koontz also punted five times for 199 yards, including two punts that were downed inside the 20-yard line. He had a long punt of 54 yards in week two.
