BOYDS, Md. – The Frostburg State women's soccer team defeated Shippensburg in their season opener by a score of 4-0.
The game was played at the Maryland Soccerplex as a part of the team's annual D2 in the DMV Showcase.
FSU was the first to threaten after both sides had struggled to gain possession in the opening minutes. Junior Caroline Burton took the first shot of the game at the 10-minute mark, though she could only send the ball high over the goal. With 20 minutes gone, junior goalkeeper Ashley Bilger stepped up in a big way, as she raced out of the goal to thwart a one-v-one opportunity and keep the Raiders off the board. The Bobcats would finally break the game open after being awarded a free kick just outside of the Raider box. Junior Hannah Thompson sent in a high cross that would be dropped by the SU keeper, where sophomore Cat Smith would find the back of the net on the loose ball.
Frostburg took the momentum and ran with it, firing two more shots off target before finding a second goal just five minutes later. Freshman Carly Gillette scored her first collegiate goal on an assist from sophomore Carolyn DeSena, who had made a lung-busting run to make the score 2-0. FSU would take three more shots before the halfway mark as they kept possession away from Shippensburg for the majority of the half.
It would not take long for the Bobcats to build on the first half lead, as just over ten minutes into the second half, DeSena would pick up her second assist of the game, finding sophomore Mackenzie Alonso with a cross that the forward was able to finish in the bottom corner of the goal. Frostburg would score their fourth and final goal on a great build-up from back to front, resulting in Gillette playing a ball into the back post, finding DeSena who was able to finish right on the doorstep.
DeSena led the attack with her goal and a pair of assists, while the defense was able to hold Shippensburg scoreless and only the one shot on target.
The Bobcats will play again on September 3 when they travel to play Georgian Court for a noon kick-off. For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
