LAKEWOOD, N.J. – The Frostburg State Women's Soccer team continued their strong start to the season with a 3-0 road victory over Georgian Court on Sunday afternoon.
Â
FSU began the game on the front foot, commanding possession in the opening eight minutes and threatening to score on multiple occasions. Junior Caroline Burton saw her effort saved by Lion keeper Alyssa Dias, before sophomore Carolyn DeSena and juniors Toni Fiocco-Mizer, Dez Mortimer, and Lela Clark all had efforts that just missed the mark. GCU found their footing just before the 10-minute mark, as junior keeper Ashley Bilger was called into action to make a save. Both sides traded shots on target, with Bilger and Dias both making a pair of saves.
Â
The Bobcats finally found the breakthrough just over 12 minutes into the half, as junior Hannah Thompson cannoned a 30-yard free kick against the crossbar, with Fiocco-Mizer smartly following up for an easy tap-in and a 1-0 lead. Frostburg had Bilger to thank for taking the lead into halftime, as she made three important saves down the stretch with Georgian Court growing into the game.
Â
Frostburg settled in at the start of the second half, as they controlled possession well in the opening 15 minutes. Fiocco-Mizer once again got the breakthrough, as she spun her defender just outside the 18 and sprinted into the box, finishing well into the left corner for a 2-0 lead.
Â
10 minutes later, sophomore Keely Knotts lofted a corner into the box, where fellow sophomore Cat Smith was able to hook the ball into the goal following a scramble for the 3-0 lead. Freshman Mary Greco nearly scored the goal of the match, as she smacked a left-footed volley towards the top of the goal, but Dias made a flying save to deny Greco her first collegiate goal. FSU's defense was able to see out the rest of the contest without much fuss to earn their second straight shutout win.
Win the victory, the Bobcats improve to 2-0 on the year, while Georgian Court falls to 1-2-1. Frostburg returns to action on Wednesday, September 7 for their home opener against Alderson Broaddus at 5 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
