ROANOKE, Va. – The Frostburg State Women's Lacrosse team faced off against Belmont Abbey in a neutral site night game on Wednesday evening, winning 22-15 to extend their current win streak to five.
I took FSU less than a minute to break the ice and open the game with a lead, with the opening goal coming from junior Lilly Stephens. Thirty seconds later, the Bobcats added another goal when freshman Kerri Hayes found the back of the net. The Crusaders responded to the opening momentum with three straight goals to take a 3-2 lead five minutes into the game. Sophomore Anna Kearney scored her first of five goals to tie things up at three, then the teams traded leads from that point, with Frostburg's goals coming from Stephens and Kearney. With under two minutes to go, freshman Julia Badolato tied things at seven goals apiece before graduate Stephanie King gave Frostburg the lead to end the quarter.
Carrying momentum from the first quarter, the Bobcats added the first two goals of the second quarter, as graduate Lindsay Kohlmann found Kearney for the first goal and Hayes scored her second of the game. Belmont Abbey cut into the lead on an unassisted goal from Emma Pherson to make the score 9-7 FSU. At the 6:38 mark, Kearney pushed the lead to 10-7, but the Crusaders again responded keeping the Bobcats within arms reach with a goal less than a minute later. The Bobcats hit their second four-goal streak of the game to push the lead to 14-8, as King scored back-to-back goals that were followed up by goals from Kearney and Hayes. The Crusaders finished the half with a goal, making the score14-9 FSU at halftime.
The third opened just as the first two quarters did, with a Bobcat goal scored by Hayes. Stephens tacked on her fourth and final goal of the day to make the score 16-9. Kholmann picked up a goal to go with her two assists and seven draw controls. A Crusader goal from Olivia Carlino would get them into double digits and make the score 17-10 FSU. Freshman Krissy Milburn added in a goal at the 4:38 mark of the third, followed up by a King goal on a Kohlmann assist to make the game 19-10 Bobcats. BAC added the final goal of the third, making the score 19-11.
Freshman Brittyn Leonard opened the final quarter of the game with a goal and got the Bobcats to 20 goals on the night. Belmont Abbey added another goal before Hayes scored FSU's final two goals, making the score 22-12. The Crusaders made a push, adding three goals late on, though it was too little, too late as Frostburg ran out 22-15 winners.
With the win, FSU improves to 6-6, while The Abbey falls to 9-7. The Bobcats return to action on the road as they are back in MEC play with a contest against Charleston (WV) on Sunday, April 24 at 1 p.m. For information and updates, stay tuned at frostburgsports.com.
