Men's Lacrosse Wins Overtime Thriller Against Saint Leo

SAINT LEO, Fla.- The Frostburg State men's lacrosse team traveled down to Florida for part one of their Spring Break trip, where they took Saint Leo University in an overtime victory, 18-17.

In the first quarter, the Bobcats got off to an early start with junior Owen McCallum's first goal of the season. Junior Bubba Love would then get an unassisted goal, followed by a goal from sophomore Austin Sipes to give FSU a 3-0 lead. The Lions would answer with a couple of goals to work back into the game before freshman Seamus Kearney would bring the momentum back to the Bobcats. Junior Chase Buckwalter and senior Gavin Schattall would also score to further the Frostburg lead, then redshirt-junior Tanner Donaldson and Sipes would close out the quarter with scores for an 8-2 lead.

In the second quarter, FSU got off to another great start with goals from junior Austin Linn and Schattall to further the lead to cap their largest lead at 10-2. The Lions would go on a run and score five straight goals before senior Ty Oehlerking ended the run to keep the lead at 11-7. Saint Leo closed out the quarter with a last-minute goal, taking the score to halftime with Frostburg up 11-8.

In the third quarter, the Bobcats would start off with a nice goal from sophomore Luke McCullough to push the lead back to four. The teams traded goals, with Love getting another goal before the Lions scored back-to-back to get within 13-11. Both sides went back-and-forth for the remainder of the quarter, with FSU getting goals from Sipes and senior Jake Bowman to take things to the final quarter up 15-13.

In the fourth quarter, junior Justin Hulse would start the scoring off for Frostburg to get back to a three-goal lead, but the Lions would get four straight goals to take their first lead at 17-16 with 1:30 remaining. Love then came up with a huge caused turnover as time winded down, then received a pass from the resulting ground ball and fired a shot to tie the game up with nine seconds left. Saint Leo won the face-off and had a chance to seal the win, but senior Kevin Reuther came up with a big save as time expired to take the game to overtime.

In overtime, the Lions had the first opportunity to score, but again Reuther stood firm to deny, allowing FSU to get the ball back. On the next possession, Bowman set up fellow senior Joey Boros to get the game-winning goal for the Bobcats, as they came away 18-17 winners.

With the win, Frostburg rises to 3-2 on the year, while Saint Leo falls to 4-2. FSU continues their Florida road trip against Florida Southern in Lakeland, Fla. on Tuesday, March 22 at 7 PM. For more information and updates, visit www.frostburgsports.com.
