Men's Lacrosse Fights Back From First Quarter Deficit in Dramatic Win

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Frostburg State men's lacrosse team picked up its second win of the season in comeback fashion over Chestnut Hill at Homewood Field, winning 13-12.

The game started off with an exchange of shots and saves, as it was the Griffins that got on the board first just two minutes into the first quarter. Two minutes later, the Bobcats evened things up at one apiece with a goal from junior Bubba Love off an assist from senior Joey Boros. Frostburg gave up the next two goals, falling behind 3-1 until Boros scored a goal of his own to make the score 3-2. Another two CHC goals came before sophomore Austin Sipes was the next Bobcat to hit the net, making the score 5-3 Griffins with four minutes left in the first quarter. Before the quarter edned, Chestnut Hill would pick up another pair of goals and stretch the lead to 7-3.

Entering the second, Frostburg opened the second quarter with some ground to make up. Senior Matthew Ward scored in a man-up situation to get to 7-4, then Sipes found another goal for the Bobcats on a feed from junior Chase Buckwalter to close the gap to two. The Griffins quickly answered with a goal 24 seconds later and stretched the lead to 8-5. The final goal of the half came in a man-up situation when Love found Sipes for his third goal and a score of 8-6 CHC.

Chestnut Hill opened the third with an early goal and another score several minutes later, making the score 10-6. The Bobcats then caught fire and scored five straight. Senior Gavin Schattall scored to start things off before Sipes got another man-up score from an assist from senior Jake Bowman to make the score 10-8. Bowman scored one of his own at the 3:32 mark to cut the lead to one on a pass from junior Evan Dere after a terrific run. Dere was hit hard after the play, resulting in another penalty, from which junior Tanner Donaldson found the back of the net and tied game at 10-10. The big third quarter was topped off with a Boros goal to take Frostburg's first lead at 11-10 with 25 seconds left in the third.

The fourth opened in a defensive grudge match, with neither team giving up a goal until around the four-minute mark. One of the highlights of the game came early in the quarter on a two-man down passage of play, as the Griffins worked a great shooting opportunity, but senior Kevin Reuther came up with a huge save to kill the penalties and keep FSU in the lead. Boros scored another goal on an assist from Schattall to get a two-goal cushion, but the Griffins would not go away quietly, scoring two goals to tie the game at 12-12. With time winding down, Dere won the resulting face-off and took a shot at goal that went just high of the crossbar, but the Bobcats kept possession, allowing Love to score a fantastic individual goal to take a 13-12 lead with just over a minute left. Chestnut Hill won the face-off, but senior Jake Sprecher came up with a massive caused turnover as the Bobcats took the ball to the offensive end of the field and ran down the clock for the dramatic win.

Sipes led the offense with four goals, while Boros tallied three goals and two assists. Sprecher and sophomore Luke McCullough led the defensive effort with three caused turnovers each, as McCullough also had a team-high five ground balls.

With the victory, Frostburg moves to 2-2 on the season with the win while the Griffins fall to 3-4. The Bobcats next game will be on Sunday, March 20 when they play at Saint Leo with a 7 PM start time. For more information visit frostburgsports.com
