INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.- The Frostburg State women's lacrosse team traveled to Indianapolis on Friday evening to take on No. 25 Davenport in an 18-7 loss.
In the first quarter, the Panthers got off to a hot start, with two of their goals coming from free position shots. They would add another goal for a 3-0 lead, but a clutch save from freshman goalkeeper Nicole Gray allowed junior attacker Lilly Stephens to get the first goal for the Bobcats after some nice passing to get up the field, including the first collegiate assist for freshman Brittyn Leonard. Davenport responded with another free position goal to end the period up 4-1.
In the second quarter, the Panthers would get the first strike to go up 5-1, but the Bobcats would answer back with their own free position shot, scored by sophomore Anna Kearney to get back within three. After a Davenport timeout, the Panthers would answer back with another goal. Both teams then traded shots without finding the net before DU scored with just under a minute left, as another good save from Gray kept the halftime deficit to 7-2.
In the third quarter, The Panthers would again score first off of a free position shot. The Bobcats would answer right back with a beautiful cut from Stephens that passed by multiple Panther defenders to get some energy back to FSU. Immediately following Stephens' goal, junior Cammie Schniedwind would overpower her defender and fire in a cannon shot to make it a four-point game at 8-4. After a couple good defensive series, the Bobcats would add another goal from Schniedwind to cut the lead to three with momentum on their side. The Panthers would answer back, though, keeping it a four-goal game. Some great passing from Frostburg would lead to a great arch shot from Kearney to cut into the lead once again. Davenport kept their scoring off free positions with another goal, making it a 10-6 game heading into the fourth.
In the fourth quarter, Davenport again scored first off another free position shot, one of four straight Panther goals as they raced out to a 14-6 lead. The Bobcats would answer with a great breakaway goal by junior midfielder Cameron Baldwin, but the DU offense would score a few more times, leading to an 18-7 victory.
With the loss, the Bobcats fall to 0-1 while the Panthers rise to 1-0 on the season. Frostburg will be back in action on Sunday, February 20 at 11 AM to take on #2 Indianapolis. For more information and updates, visit
