Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Weakley Has Most Points in a Game Since 2016 in Loss to #8 Pioneers

GLENVILLE, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Women's Basketball team fell to eighth-ranked Glenville State on Wednesday afternoon by a score of 103-75.

GSU opened the game with an early three, to which freshman Emilee Weakley responded with FSU's first four points of the game on a pair of free throws and a mid-range jumper. Senior Maggie Sharp added a layup with just over seven minutes remaining in the opening quarter, but the Bobcats went cold from the field for the next three minutes, allowing the Pioneers to get out to a 14-6 lead. Senior Arianna Briggs-Hall finally got Frostburg back on the board with a layup, then Weakley scored a layup and a triple to get back within 19-14. GSU quickly shut down the momentum, scoring the final six points of the first with a 25-14 lead.

Junior MacKenzie Freeze opened the second period with a smooth jumper, but the Bobcat defense couldn't produce stops early on, as Glenville grew the lead to 29-16. FSU managed to get three straight buckets on a lay-in from graduate Shelby Funchess, a layup from Weakley, and Freeze draining one from downtown to get back within six at 29-23. Once more, the Pioneers reasserted themselves and poured in their offense to the tune of an 11-2 run and a 40-25 lead. Freshman Carine Pinkney finally broke a five-minute field goal drought for Frostburg, then took a rebound coast-to-coast for another layup, with Freeze adding another jumper and a late free throw to take the game to the half at 45-34 Glenville.

The Pioneers continued their trend of seeming to not miss from the floor, as they opened the second half with scores on their first four possessions coming out of the break. Briggs-Hall and Thomas got back-to-back layups, then Sharp nailed a three, Weakley converted on an and-one, and Briggs-Hall scored another layup with the teams trading baskets up to 59-48. GSU again used defense to their advantage, holding the Bobcats to just one made field goal across two minutes and growing their lead to 67-52 in the process. Junior Rhiana Hall ended the run with a layup, then Thomas came up with a huge block that led to a triple by Weakley to bring FSU back within 10. Weakley got another layup and Pinkney made a free throw late on, but Glenville stayed hot on offense to take a 74-60 lead into the final frame.

Pinkney started the fourth quarter by making four out of four free throws, as GSU continued to apply pressure, ballooning the lead to 94-72 with just under four minutes to play. Weakley had the only points for the Bobcats in the final minutes, hitting a three as the Pioneers ended the game with the final nine points for the 103-75 victory.

Weakley had an astounding performance, as her 34 points not only led the team but was the ninth-most points scored in a single game in program history, including the most scored in a game since former guard Victoria Diggs had an equal amount in December of 2016. Pinkney followed with nine points and five rebounds, both second on the team behind Weakley, in just her second collegiate game.

With the loss, Frostburg falls to 2-7 on the year, while Glenville improves to 6-1. FSU returns to Bobcat Arena on Saturday, December 10, as they face Concord at 2 p.m. Information and updates will be posted at frostburgsports.com.
