Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Suffers Overtime Loss to Concord Despite Hall's Career-High

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Basketball team took their second straight home game into overtime in a heartbreaking 74-63 loss to Concord on Saturday afternoon.

After winning the opening tip, freshman Emilee Weakley quickly charged into the paint and grabbed her own missed layup for a putback and the first points of the game, but CU responded with five unanswered within 30 seconds. Senior Ciara Thomas broke an FSU two-minute scoring drought with a smooth jumper, then fellow senior Maggie Sharp knocked down a triple to put the Bobcats ahead 7-5. The Mountain Lions responded with a three of their own, but junior Rhiana Hall stepped up with a pair of free throws and a knockdown from downtown to get her afternoon started. Frostburg stayed hot from outside the arc, as Hall and Thomas both added threes and Weakley hit a last-second layup to take FSU into the first quarter break up 20-12.

Weakley started the second period with a layup to put the Bobcats up by 10, but Concord's defense stepped up and held the Bobcats scoreless over a four-and-a-half-minute stretch as they mounted their way back to a tie game at 23-23. Thomas finally broke the scoreless streak with a pair of free throws, then Hall and Weakley quickly tacked on a pair of triples to take an eight-point lead. CU scored a layup with just over a minute remaining and junior MacKenzie Freeze knocked in a pair from the charity stripe to take the sides into the half with Frostburg up 33-25.

The Mountain Lions came out with renewed energy to start the third, stunning FSU with five points in the first minute to suddenly get within three. Weakley responded with a mid-range jumper, but that was the only points for FSU during the first four minutes, as Concord got out to a 36-35 lead. Sharp tried to get things going with another make from range, but Frostburg again went quiet from the field for the next three minutes and allowed CU to go ahead 42-38. Hall and Weakley combined for Frostburg's next seven points, with a late three from Hall vastly important to keep the deficit at 48-45 going into the fourth.

Concord continued their third quarter momentum with four straight free throws to grow their lead to seven, with Weakley and Freeze stealing back some momentum to stay within three. The Bobcat offense relied upon Hall to bring energy, as she hit two tough jumpers and knocked in a pair from the charity stripe, then sophomore Harley Herndon capitalized on a Thomas steal to put Frostburg up 57-54 with just under two minutes remaining.  CU scored on their next possession down the court, then Sharp got a steal and was fouled with 37 seconds left, though she could only make one of her two free throws. Concord's Jaisah Smith then put in a clutch bucket to tie the game with 15 seconds remaining. Hall stepped up once again, drilling a contested jumper as Frostburg thought they had the win with six seconds on the clock. Smith had other ideas, taking the advanced inbounds to the basket and putting in a layup with less than a second left to take the game into overtime at 60-60.

The Mountain Lions controlled the extra period from start to finish, as the Bobcats' only offense came on three Weakley free throws in the entire five minutes, with Concord regularly generating baskets for a 74-63 victory.

Hall led all scorers with 24 points, setting a new career-high in the process, while pulling in five boards, dishing two assists, and swiping a pair of steals in an all-round performance. Weakley followed with 18 points of her own and a game-high 12 rebounds to tack on another double-double performance for her season.

With the loss, Frostburg falls to 2-9 on the year, while Concord improves to 3-6. The Bobcats return to Bobcat Arena on Thursday, December 15 to face Clarion at 5:30 p.m. Information and updates will be posted at frostburgsports.com.
