Defense Shuts Down WVWC Offense in Football Victory

BUCKHANNON, W. VA. – The Frostburg State football team defeated West Virginia Wesleyan on the road Saturday afternoon by a final score of 37-0.

FSU started things off by winning the coin toss and deferring until the second half. The opening drive from Wesleyan would see a couple early flags before ending at midfield on a fourth down stop by redshirt sophomore Colby Street. Frostburg would start their first drive with success on the ground before a WVWC interception to get the ball back. FSU's defense would force a three and out to quickly get the ball back to the offense, taking the ball down the field with a 21-yard chunk coming from redshirt freshman Sean Aaron rushing up the right side. Junior Dayne Koontz would knock a 31-yard field goal through blustery wind to put Frostburg up 3-0. Wesleyan would again put a drive together to midfield before FSU came up with another fourth down stop, as the first quarter would end with Aaron breaking though for 27 yards into WVWC territory.

Redshirt sophomore QB Graham Walker would throw his second pick of the day on the third play of the second quarter, keeping the offense from extending the lead. The FSU defense continued to show its dominance, forcing a three and out and another punt. Sophomore Isaiah Lester would check in for Frostburg and scored on a quarterback keeper from 31 yards out for a 10-0 lead. Up double digits, the momentum was clearly on Frostburg's side, as the defense again forced a three and out and sent the offense back onto the field. Walker would hit redshirt freshman Jamil Bishop across the middle of the field for a 66-yard catch and run to score, with Koontz nailing the extra point to make the score 17-0 Frostburg. Wesleyan would put a strong drive together to end the half, though it ended with a huge sack by junior Rob Horsey as time expired in the quarter.

Frostburg would start the second half with the ball but would have to punt after a five play drive and flip the field. The FSU defense would continue to come up with big plays, this time coming when senior Dylan Culpen picked off a pass that set up a field goal to make the score 20-0 on the Koontz make. On the next FSU drive, senior Josh Maxwell would have 42-yards on three carries to set up another Koontz made field goal, this time from 32-yards out. The best drive of the quarter for Wesleyan would come to an end on another pick by Culpen, as this time the linebacker captain took it to the house to go up 30-0 for the final score of the third.

The final quarter of the game would open with a short punt out of bounds from Wesleyan. FSU would keep the ball on the ground with their first drive of the fourth before Koontz would pin the ball deep on a nice punt down to the 11-yard line. The Frostburg defense again asserted itself and forced a quick punt that ended up being blocked by redshirt sophomore Yasir Holmes. With a short field, Frostburg would score again with Walker finding senior Donnell Milligan on a slant for a 10-yard TD to end the scoring at 37-0.

Walker went 8-of-17 for 110 yards and a pair of scores, with Bishop and Milligan combining for five catches, 114 yards, and the two touchdown catches. Maxwell and Aaron torched the Wesleyan defense for 187 total yards on just 28 carries. Culpen led the defense with seven total tackles and his pair of interceptions, while Holmes added three sacks and his blocked punt.

With the win Frostburg moves to 7-3 on the year, while WVWC falls to 1-9. The regular season finale is next up for FSU, as they travel to West Liberty on Saturday, November 12 for a 1 PM start. For more information please visit frostburgsports.com.
