Men's Basketball Loses Home Contest to Yellow Jackets

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Men's Basketball team hosted West Virginia State for a Wednesday evening matchup, falling by a score of 100-85.

The Bobcats came out with a quick start off the jump as junior Jason Murphy put in back-to-back layups to get on the board early. Graduate Vincent Smalls and junior Tairell Fletcher would both convert on two layups each to give FSU an early six-point lead. Senior Agyei Edwards went on to knock down his first three of the evening, extending the Bobcat lead to nine by a score of 15-6 five minutes into the game. Murphy added another three points to his night by converting on a three-point play opportunity, bringing the score to 18-10.

The end of the first half would quickly go back and forth between both teams. Frostburg's Murphy and Fletcher led the Bobcat scoring in the first half with seven and six points, respectively, as WVSU's offense caught fire to the tune of a 46-33 halftime lead.

Fletcher would come out firing in the second half, knocking down back-to-back jump shots to bring the Bobcats within nine. Murphy would also once again get on the board in the second half with a seven-point run for the Bobcats, slamming down two dunks in the process. Smalls got in on the scoring, knocking down two jump shots in a row for Frostburg, but they weren't able to take a chunk out of the Yellow Jacket lead, which stood at 66-53 midway through the second half.

Fletcher continued to get buckets for the Bobcats deep into the half, scoring 12 of his 24 points on the night in the final five minutes in hopes to lead the Bobcats to a come-from-behind victory. Edwards would also knock down his second three of the night and scored a pair of layups to close out the second half, but ultimately wasn't enought in a 100-85 loss.

Fletcher led the charge for Frostburg with 24 points and seven rebounds, followed by Murphy with 19 points and seven boards. Smalls led the Bobcats in rebounds with nine, adding 11 points on the night.

With the loss, the Bobcats fall to 3-4, while the Yellow Jackets improve to 6-0 on the year. FSU is back in action on Saturday, December 3 as they travel to the University of Charleston (WV) for a 4PM tip-off. Information and updates will be posted at frostburgsports.com.
