FROSTBURG, Md. – Frostburg Volleyball wrapped up homecoming weekend on Saturday night with a loss at the hands of Davis & Elkins, by a match score of 3-1.
The Senators opened set one the same way they would open all four, by scoring the first point. Back-to-back kills from Macie Magallon accounted for the first two points for D&E, as they quickly ran out to a 7-3 lead. A few scoring runs of three-plus points would give the Senators a set one victory by a final score of 25-19, with Magallon picking up five kills for Davis & Elkins.
In the second frame, the Bobcats began to find their footing midway through the set. Facing a 14-9 deficit, junior Beverly Braun picked up a kill to bring the ball back into the hands of Frostburg. A five-point run capped off by another kill from Braun would see FSU pull within one, but could not close it out. With a pair of set points at 24-22, D&E recovered to pull back even, then picked up the set on a kill from Magallon, and an ace from Brilane Manchego.
Facing a two-set deficit, Frostburg would not go down without a fight. The Senators pushed them to the brink to go up 19-14. From there, however, Braun got the party started with a kill and FSU found a 19-19 tie with Braun tagging back-to-back markers en route to a seven kill third set. For the second straight set, the two teams played extra points, but this time, the Bobcats would prevail on an ace by senior Bianca Smalls to take set three 27-25.
The Senators came out in set four looking to take care of business, but once again Frostburg battled back. Braun mashed her 15th kill to cut an early deficit to 3-5, and then a five-point serving run by Braun saw FSU take the lead 8-5. Davis & Elkins responded with two four-point runs of their own looking to close out the match. FSU again was able to force the game into a back-and-forth affair, but ultimately the Senators came away winners by a score of 26-24.
The Bobcats were led by Braun's 18 kills, supplying half of redshirt junior Haley Delor's 36 assists. Delor also tallied 21 digs, tying for the team-high with sophomore Fiona Gonzalez Medina. Freshman Gabriella Jones impressed in her second straight start, recording a match-high six blocks.Â
With the loss, Frostburg falls to 14-9 on the year, with Davis & Elkins improving to 11-8. The Bobcats are back in action next week as they head off to Glenville State on Tuesday, October 11 for a 7 p.m. Information and updates will be posted at frostburgsports.com.
