Volleyball Drops Five Set Road Heartbreaker to Pioneers

GLENVILLE, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Volleyball team lost their Tuesday road match 3-2 to Glenville State in an effort that went the full distance.

FSU began the first set on the front foot, using an ace from sophomore AJ Thompson, who then combined on a block with junior Beverly Braun to the tune of a 4-1 lead. GSU rattled off five of the next six points to take the lead at 6-5. Each side traded points, with the Pioneers often able to hold a narrow lead, but the Bobcats never went away, being down just 15-14. Frostburg took four points in a row, thanks to an ace from redshirt junior Hayley Delor and Braun, who put down a kill and then joined freshman Gabriella Jones on a block for an 18-15 lead. Freshman Joie Allen was the next to step up, as she earned a pair of points on a solo block and a kill of her own to push the lead to 21-16. Glenville was able to respond once more, scoring four of the next five points to get within 22-20. FSU got back-to-back points from another Allen block and an ace by junior Jenna Gossard to go up 24-20, and despite a pair of late Pioneer points took the set off a Glenville error 25-22.

GSU came out the better team in the second set, jumping out to leads of 8-3 and 10-5, as Frostburg only managed one kill, from freshman Amanda Knieper, during the run. The Bobcats stormed back to take the next seven points, as Gossard recorded another ace, Thompson and Allen each scored a kill, and Thompson aided both Delor and Knieper on blocks to take the lead 12-10. Each team traded three point runs up to 15-13, then it was Glenville's turn to take control of the set, winning eight of nine points for a 21-16 lead. FSU was unable to mount a late comeback, giving the Pioneers the set 25-20 to even the match.

The third set started the most balanced so far, as each team fought to an 8-8 tie early on. The Bobcats got the first swing of momentum with six of the next seven points, featuring kills by Knieper and Delor to go up 14-9. The lead eventually got out to 16-11, but GSU again used a run of five straight points to even things at 16-16. Frostburg wouldn't be deterred, winning five of the next six points on kills from Allen and Braun, with the latter getting an ace to go ahead 21-17. The Pioneers scored three of the next four points to get back to 22-20, but Thompson ended any hopes of a comeback with a pair of kills to win the set 25-21.

With their backs against the wall, Glenville raced out to a 7-2 lead, looking to stay alive in set four. Allen rattled off three straight kills to get within 7-5, but the Pioneers used a 7-3 run to go up 14-8. Braun and Thompson led the team on a six-point run, which was capped off on a solo Delor block to even things at 14-14. Glenville was able to respond with five of six points to retake a 20-16 lead, but FSU bounced back with three points of their own on another Allen kill and a block from Knieper and junior McKaily Thomson-Moran at 20-19. GSU was able to see the set out, taking five of the next seven points to win the set 25-21 and take the match to a fifth set decider.

The Pioneers carried their fourth set momentum into the final frame, keeping the Bobcats at bay early on for an 8-5 lead. FSU scored three straight on a pair of Thompson kills either side of a Gossard ace, but Glenville won four of the next five points to retain a 12-9 lead. Braun and back-to-back Pioneer errors got Frostburg back even at 12-12, but GSU was able to get over the line with three of the final four points for a 15-13 set win and the 3-2 marathon match victory.

Allen led the Bobcat charge offensively with a career-high 13 kills while hitting .440 on the night. Sophomore libero Fiona Gonzalez Medina was outstanding defensively, setting a new personal high of 28 digs, joined in the effort by Gossard's 19, which is just one shy of her career best.

With the loss, Frostburg falls to 14-10, while Glenville improves to 14-10 on the year. FSU returns to the court on Friday, October 14 to face Concord in Bobcat Arena at 7 p.m. Information and updates will be posted at frostburgsports.com.
