FAIRMONT, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Volleyball team lost a road match to Fairmont State on Tuesday evening in a 3-0 sweep.
Â
The first set began with a 2-0 Bobcat lead thanks to back-to-back kills from junior Beverly Braun, eventually becoming a 5-3 lead with a kill from junior McKaily Thomson-Moran, who then combined with junior Katie Keech on a block. The Fighting Falcons then took five of the next six points for an 8-6 lead, followed by Frostburg winning four of five points to re-take the lead at 10-9 on a kill by sophomore AJ Thompson. With the Bobcats up 11-10, Fairmont took full control of the set with an 8-1 run for a commanding 18-12 lead. Frostburg battled towards the end of the set with kills from Thompson and freshman Amanda Knieper, but the Fighting Falcon lead was too much to overcome with a 25-19 set victory.
Â
Fairmont took their momentum into the second set, taking early leads of 4-1, 7-3, and 9-5 as Frostburg struggled to get going. The Bobcats were able to find some footing on kills from Knieper, Thompson, and senior Bianca Smalls to get within 12-10, but three straight Falcon points swiftly regained them control. Frostburg continued their resilience, coming all the way back to tie the score at 20-20 after kills from Braun, Thomson-Moran, Thompson, and an ace by Smalls. Fairmont quickly thwarted any hope of the Bobcats tying the match, winning five straight points to take a two-set lead 25-20.
Â
In desperation mode to start the third set, Frostburg raced out to a 6-1 lead after some Falcon errors and a Thompson kill. Fairmont hit another gear offensively from the deficit, going on a 12-2 run to take a 13-8 lead as they looked to close out the match. Knieper and freshman Joie Allen scored kills to bring the Bobcats within 16-13, but Frostburg couldn't get closer than that, as the Fighting Falcons held the set at an arm's length, eventually winning 25-19 for the match sweep.
Â
Braun led the offense with nine kills and added 13 digs in the effort. Sophomore Fiona Gonzalez Medina recorded 21 digs, good enough for her second-best total on the year, with Smalls also earning double-digit digs at 10.
Â
With the loss, the Bobcats fall to 13-8 on the year, while Fairmont improves to 18-2. Frostburg is back in action at home for a 4 p.m. match against West Virginia Wesleyan on Friday, October 7 to kick off Homecoming weekend. Information and updates will be posted at frostburgsports.com.
