FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Volleyball team kicked off Homecoming weekend with a clean 3-0 sweep over West Virginia Wesleyan on Friday evening.
Â
In the first set, WVWC struck the first blow with an early 5-2 lead, though FSU responded with a trio of points, including an ace from redshirt junior Hayley Delor and a kill by junior Beverly Braun to even things. Each side went through swings of momentum, trading points up to 12-11 with Wesleyan holding a narrow lead. An ace by sophomore AJ Thompson provided the third straight Frostburg point to go ahead 14-12, then when WVWC evened the score again, FSU tore through the rest of the set on an 11-1 run to come away 25-15 winners. Braun had a kill and an ace during the stretch, as freshmen Joie Allen and Amanda Knieper ended the set with back-to-back kills.
Â
The second set featured some more momentum swings early on, as the sides traded multi-point rallies to a 9-8 Frostburg lead. Once again, FSU was able to take control of the set, going on a 7-1 run from a pair of kills by Allen and freshman Gabriella Jones, then a Braun ace and a combined Knieper-Thompson block for a 16-9 lead. Wesleyan wasn't able to recover, as Frostburg ended the set with four out of five points, including kills from Braun, Knieper and Thompson and an ace by junior Jenna Gossard for a 25-14 win.
Â
FSU jumped out to a 5-2 lead in set three on a pair of Braun kills and a Delor ace, but WVWC battled back to tie the set at 6-6. Frostburg continued their habit of keeping their foot on the gas, taking six straight points on kills from Allen and Delor, then a massive block by Allen and Thompson. The lead eventually was pushed all the way to 21-9 as FSU looked to put the set away quickly, using kills by Thompson and Braun and an ace from senior Bianca Smalls. WVWC hung on late, going on a 7-2 run to get within 23-16, but Jones ended the set with a kill and a block with Allen to take the set and win the match.
Â
A balanced Frostburg attack was led by Braun's nine kills, followed by Thompson with eight and Allen's six. Thompson added a match-high four blocks, followed closely by Delor and Jones with three apiece, as Gossard aided the defensive effort with 10 digs.
Â
With the win, FSU improves to 14-8 on the year, while Wesleyan falls to 5-14. Frostburg has a quick turnaround, as they come right back to Bobcat Arena on Saturday, October 8 to face Davis & Elkins at 5 p.m. Information and updates will be posted at frostburgsports.com.
