Volleyball Extends Winning Streak to Three with Win Over Battlers

FROSTBURG, Md.- Frostburg State Volleyball increased their winning streak to three straight matches on Tuesday evening with a 3-1 victory over Alderson Broaddus in Bobcat Arena.
 
In the first set, the teams went back and forth to start before AB rattled off five straight points to take a 12-7 lead, with Jocie Fisher getting three straight kills. FSU came back to win three of the next four points, with freshman AJ Thompson netting the final two points to pull back to 13-11. The Battlers went on another run to go up 17-11, but once again the Bobcats fought back, going on a 12-3 run to go up 22-20. Both teams again traded several points to take the game to 26-26, before back-to-back kills from sophomore Beverly Braun won the set 28-26.
 
Frostburg started out strong in set two, with junior Jackie Sterenberg getting a couple kills to go up 9-6. AB would win five of the next six points to go up 11-10. The teams traded scoring runs, with AB going up 15-12 before FSU went back up 17-15. The Battlers slowly took control of the set, going up 24-20 on an ace from Lainey McGonigle. Frostburg would fight back to 24-23, but a kill from Fisher ended the set 25-23 to tie the match at a set apiece.
 
In set three, Frostburg again took an early lead on the back of Thompson, going up 7-4 and then 11-7. AB would fight back to make it 12-11 before six straight Bobcat points gave FSU a commanding 18-11 lead. Frostburg would close out the set strong, winning the final six points, with two key kills from sophomore Laken Michael to win 25-14 and take a 2-1 set lead.
 
FSU had their best start in the match in set four, jumping out to a 6-0 lead on some solid serves from sophomore Jenna Gossard, eventually pushing the lead to 10-3. Frostburg continued to dominate, going up 16-6 as Braun earned four of the next six points on kills. The Bobcats wouldn't let up, going up 20-8 with Michael getting a couple kills, before Braun and sophomore McKaily Thompson-Moran led Frostburg to five of the last six points in a triumphant 25-11 win to take the match 3-1.
 
Braun finished with a team-high 19 kills and three blocks, as she was joined in double-digit kills by Thompson. Freshman Fiona Gonzalez Medina had an outstanding defensive performance, leading the team with 18 digs, just ahead of junior libero McKenna Houser's 16. Redshirt sophomore Hayley Delor was just one assist shy of her season high with 48, while also earning five kills and two aces.
 
With the win, Frostburg improves to 4-9 on the season, while AB falls to 4-4. The Bobcats return to the court Friday, October 1 against Wheeling, where it is Family Weekend at Bobcat Arena. For information and updates stay tuned at frostburgsports.com.
