Bobcats Win Double Overtime Thriller

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State football team defeated the Univeristy of Charleston 30-24 in double overtime. The Bobcat special teams came up big blocking two field goals on the night.

Frostburg started the game off strong defensively forcing an early punt. Bryce Santos, Charleston's punter, was able to pin the Bobcats back on their own 11 yard line. The FSU offense stalled on its first opportunity of the night with a three and out that gave Charleston good field position. Charleston was able to break into Frostburg territory for the first time in the game but were forced to punt after a nice pass breakup from sophomore Akyian Loney. After another three and out from FSU the Golden Eagles were able to strike first on a rushing touchdown with just over two minutes to play in the first quarter.

The start of the second quarter found the Bobcats with the ball in Charleston territory. After a first down from a pass interference call, senior Gavin Lavat broke loose for a 21-yard gain. The drive lasted 19 plays as the Bobcats were able to put three on the board from a sophomore Dayne Koontz field goal from 23 yards out, making the score 7-3 going into the half.

FSU would get their first lead of the game on their second drive of the second half with a drive starting at their own 19-yard line. Senior Malcolm Facey got it started with a 17-yard run, then at the Frostburg 49-yard line sophomore Graham Walker found senior Malik Morris for a 28-yard gain to the Charleston 23-yard line. On third-and-six from the Charleston 19, Walker threw a dart to senior Christian Thornton to put the Bobcats up 10-3.

Charleston would not go away, however, as a long drive resulted in a touchdown pass from Guy Myers to Marquis McCoy to put the Golden Eagles back up 14-10. FSU wouldn't be able to get momentum on their next drive, but Charleston gave the ball right back on an interception from sophomore Mitchell West.

On Charleston's next possession, another big defensive play came from an offensive player, as Morris came up with a huge field goal block to prevent the Golden Eagles from adding to the lead. FSU would drive down the field with 3:28 on the clock, chipping their way down the field. Senior Chandler Breeden made a huge catch on third-and-seven to keep the drive going, and just three plays later, Walker would again find Thornton on a 22-yard strike to put FSU back up 17-14.

On the very first play after the resulting kickoff, sophomore Billie Walker intercepted Javonte Howard to almost wrap the game up. Charleston though, would again not go away, using all of their timeouts to stall the Frostburg drive and get the ball back with minimal time left. They would be able to drive down the field, getting to the FSU 36-yard line with just a second remaining. Tim McCutchen came on to hit a 52-yard field goal and send the game into overtime. The teams would trade touchdowns on the first overtime period, with Lavat running in for the Bobcats and Josh Brown doing the same for Charleston.

In the second overtime, it would be another blocked field goal that ended up leading FSU to a win, as senior Carl Igweh got his hands to McCutchen's kick, meaning Frostburg just needed a score to win. That score would come on Lavat's second touchdown of the game, giving the Bobcats the final 30-24 victory.

Frostburg remains perfect on the year at 3-0, while Charleston falls to 1-1. The Bobcats next go on the road at Concord on Saturday, September 25, with kickoff set for 1 p.m. For information and updates keep posted on frostburgsports.com.
