Bobcats Beat Mountain Lions on the Road

ATHENS, W. Va. -  The Frostburg State football team defeated Concord on the road 42-23 to stay perfect on the season Saturday afternoon.

The Bobcats didn't waste much time getting things started against the Mountain Lions. The Bobcats kicked off to start the game and then scored on the second play of the drive, when sophomore Mitchell West jumped a short pass and returned the interception 30 yards for a touchdown. Frostburg sent the defense back out after the score and forced a quick three-and-out from Concord. Senior Malik Morris started Frostburg's first offensive drive off with a 33-yard catch and run from redshirt freshman Graham Walker's throw. The drive was finished off by a five-yard run from senior Gavin Lavat to put FSU up 14-0 after the point-after attempt from sophomore Dayne Koontz. FSU had another nice defensive stand before putting together a 12-play, 57-yard drive. Capping off the drive was an 18-yard completion from Walker to senior Lincoln Ikwubuo for a touchdown for a commanding 21-0 lead. The Mountain Lions were able to put a score of their own on the board when Kris Copeland had a five-yard touchdown run. Senior Carl Igweh was able to get a hand to the resulting PAT to keep CU to six points. With the first quarter almost over, Ikwubuo was able to get behind his defender on a vertical route up the hash for his second touchdown on a perfectly-placed pass from Walker. The 58-yard reception put the Bobcats up 28-6 at the end of the first quarter.

The Mountain Lions put together a solid drive to open the second quarter until a sack fumble was caused by junior Luke Freeman. After a Frostburg punt, Concord put together another solid drive until a sack from sophomore Leonard Scott caused a fumble that was picked up by freshman Payton Payne for a 55-yard scoop and score. The Mountain Lions were able to tack on one more score in the first half, making the score 35-13.

The second half started off very similar to the first, as the Bobcats received the kickoff and scored five plays later. Morris lined up on the outside and ran a slant, getting inside his defender and never looked back, scampering into the endzone for a 60-yard catch and run. Koontz added on the extra point and put FSU up 42-13. The rest of the third quarter was made up of punts and one missed 40-yard field goal.

The fourth quarter started with the Mountain Lions having the ball. With the FSU cushion at 29 points, Concord caught fire with a Tywan Pearce touchdown, where he was able to spin out of one tackle and race to the endzone.  Concord came out and recovered a surprise onside kick to retain the football. They went on to tack on a field goal after a fine defensive goal-line stand by the Frostburg defense. The Bobcats recovered the resulting onside kick and did not relinquish the ball for the rest of the game, ending the final score at 42-23.

With the win, Frostburg moves to 4-0 on the season while Concord falls to 1-2. FSU was led by Walker's 246 passing yards to go along with three touchdowns. Ikwubuo had  five catches for 112 of those yards and two touchdowns. The FSU defense came up big, scoring two of the team's touchdowns from Payne and West. The stingy Bobcat run defense only gave up 44 yards on the ground.

Frostburg returns home next weekend to face UNC Pembroke on family weekend, with the game slated for October 2 with a 1 PM kickoff. For up-to-date information on the Bobcats visit frostburgsoports.com.
