CHARLESTON, W Va.- Frostburg State Football continued their positive start to the 2021 season with a dominant victory over the West Virginia State Yellow Jackets on Saturday, September 11.
The Bobcats started out in impressive fashion after two stalled drives by both sides with a 65-yard touchdown on a screen pass from sophomore Graham Walker to graduate Zae Giles. After several defensive stands, Walker then found standout senior wide receiver Malik Morris on a 23-yard touchdown pass into triple coverage on third and long. Then the duo found the end zone again on the very next drive with a 47-yard busted coverage catch and run by Morris, making it 21-0 nearing the half. The Yellow Jackets then drove down the field in a two-minute drill with several read-option looks that ended in a Donovan Riddick 11-yard touchdown run. The score put the Yellow Jackets on the board, making it 21-7 at the half.
Moving into the second half, the Bobcats struck first with a three-yard touchdown run from senior Malcolm Facey. The Yellow Jackets then responded in the beginning of the fourth with a 60-yard touchdown catch by Keedrick Cunningham making it 28-14. Facey would put the dagger into the Yellow Jackets with another short touchdown run of two yards to make it 34-14 with just 8:25 to go. The Bobcats then coasted to victory, only allowing a score with time dwindling down, making the final score 34-21.
It was a complete game for the Bobcat offense, as they went on to have very solid performances from Walker, Morris, Giles, Facey, and senior Gavin Lavat. Walker went 9-for-14 for 193 yards and three touchdowns in a bounce-back performance after week one. Lavat hit the century mark of 100 yards rushing, while Facey fell just two yards shy with 98 yards but picked up two touchdowns. Giles came out of the gate hot with the 65-yard touchdown for FSU and went on to be Frostburg's first 100-yard receiver of the season, ending the game with 103 yards. Morris earned player of the game honors on 99.5 WDZN for his tone-setting scores in the first half. He ended the game with 68 yards and two touchdowns.
