INSTITUTE, W Va. – The Frostburg State softball team came up short in their doubleheader at West Virginia State Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats lost game one by a score of 2-1 and the second game 5-3. This moves Frostburg's record to 21-14, while the Yellow Jackets improve to 26-10 on the year.
The first game featured sophomore Shawna Leonard in the circle for the Bobcats and Kasey Murphy for the Yellow Jackets. Frostburg was able to score their only run of the game in the first. Senior Kat Treff hit a double to left-center to lead off the game. Treff was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by first-year Sierra Sanderson and was able to score on another sac bunt from fellow senior Sam Carver. Frostburg threatened again in the second after sophomore Brianna Powell singled and then stole her 25th base of the season, but the offense couldn't drive her in.
The Yellow Jackets were able to score twice in the second to take the lead 2-1. Treff led off the top of the third with a single and then was able to move to second on a stolen base. The Bobcats again left a runner in scoring position, keeping the Yellow Jackets in the lead. The fourth inning saw three up and three down for both sides, and again in the sixth. The Bobcats were unable to even things up in the seventh inning, giving the Yellow Jackets a 2-1 victory in game one.
In game two, the Bobcats sent the minimum to the plate in the top of the first. First-year Sydney Theobald gave up two runs in the first before managing to work out of the inning, leaving the bases loaded. The Bobcats answered in the top of the second when junior Ava Gnibus doubled in first-year Brianna Munday to cut the lead in half. The game was then tied on a sacrifice fly from Powell. The next batter, junior Kennadie Batchelor, laid down a bunt that scored Gnibus, giving the Bobcats a 3-2 lead. The Yellow Jackets were able to add another run in the bottom of the second, evening up the game at three runs apiece.
Things remained even until the Yellow Jackets took the lead in the bottom of the fourth. They were able to add another run in the sixth to insure the 5-3 win over the Bobcats.
