Bobcats Clinch No. 2 Seed in North with Split at Charleston

CHARLESTON, W. Va. – The Frostburg State softball team split the Sunday afternoon doubleheader with Charleston. The Bobcats took game one 5-2 and then lost the second game in the 10th inning 4-3. FSU wraps up regular season play at 22-14 and the Golden Eagles move to 30-12. 
 
The first three innings didn't see any runs for either team. The starting pitcher for the Bobcats, sophomore Shawna Leonard, did work out of a base loaded situation in the bottom of the second to keep the game even.  The Golden Eagles got the first runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning when a single to right field scored two runs.  
 
 
The game remained tied until the sixth when first-year Katie Ernst led off with a triple and then scored on a ball that got by the catcher. First-year Sierra Sanderson made quick work of the Golden Eagles in the bottom of the sixth. The Bobcats started a rally with two down in the seventh when sophomore Brianna Powell drew and walk and then moved to second on a stolen base. With Powell in scoring position, junior Batchelor tripled to center, tying things up at 2-2. Batchelor was then able score the go-ahead run on a pass ball. Ernst then hit a triple that was followed up by a senior Kat Treff walk and stolen base. With runners on second and third, Sanderson added two more insurance runs for the Bobcats with a double to left.  With a three up three down seventh from Sanderson, the Bobcats won 5-2.  
 
 
In game two, the Golden Eagles again scored the opening run of the game when they were able to bring one player across home in the first. The Bobcats saw their first hit in the third when Ernst hit a triple, but was stranded there when the inning ended. Charleston scored two more runs in the third by putting four hits together in the inning.  
 
 
The Bobcats answered in the top of the fifth, as senior Aliyah Ramey led things off with a double and advanced to third on a Powell single. Ernst scored both runners when she hit a double to left making the score 3-2. The game was then tied when Ernst was able to score on a ball hit to the shortstop by Sanderson.   
 
 
The game remained tied with senior Emily Talbert and Charleston's Morgan Hoppe battling it out for the next five innings as the game moved into extra innings. Charleston was able to end the game in the tenth inning when a sacrifice fly made the score 4-3.  
 
 
The Bobcats' next game with be in the MEC tournament. Frostburg will play their opening game against Concord at 12 PM Friday, May 7. For more information visit frostburgsports.com.
