Bobcats Fall to Falcons at Home

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State softball team drops two games to Fairmont State at home. The Bobcats move to an overall record of 9-6 while the Falcons are now 10-4.

Frostburg sent senior Emily Talbert to the circle in game one. Talbert was able to work relatively cleanly until the end of the second inning when Fairmont was able to score two runs on a triple that just got past the Bobcats defense. The Bobcats threatened in the second on a single from senior Sam Carver and a couple of walks that loaded the bases. FSU was unable to capitalize with the runners on base.

Sophomore Shawna Leonard came in to pitch at the start of the third and would pitch the next two innings before Talbert would reenter the game. The Falcons were able to add two more runs in the third off a home run and one more in the fifth. This made the score going into the bottom of the fifth 5-0. The Bobcats were able to produce a run off a first-year Sierra Sanderson triple and then a pass ball that got her home.

The Falcons struck again in the sixth adding five more runs and making the score 10-1. The Bobcats rallied with a strong inning of their own scoring three runs. First-year catcher Katie Ernst knocked in one of the runs on a single that scored Senior Taylor McCarty. The final run of the inning came from another single off the bat of junior Ava Gnibus making the score 10-4. The game ended at that score with the Bobcats unable to produce a seventh inning comeback.

The second game of the day saw first-year Sydney Theobald pitching a complete game for the Bobcats. The Bobcats had a chance to strike early when senior Kat Treff singled and then worked her way around the basses getting to third. Sophomore Brianna Powell advanced on a walk and took off toward second drawing a throw and allowing Treff to break for home. The close play at the plate went in favor of the Falcons and kept the game at zeros.

Fairmont was able to get on the board in the third scoring two runs. The fourth inning saw the Bobcats again get runners in scoring position. After a McCarty walk, Carver doubled to get the Bobcats to third and second with one out. The Bobcats were not able to knock in the runners. The rest of the game was worked through relatively cleanly with an ending score of 3-0 Fairmont.

The Bobcats play again on Saturday, April 10th for a doubleheader against Alderson Broaddus. The first game is set to begin at 12:00 p.m. For more information visit www.frostburgsports.com.
