Ramey Clubs Two Homers as Bobcats Sweep Battlers

PHILIPPI, W. Va. – Frostburg State softball earned a doubleheader sweep against Alderson Broaddus on Saturday afternoon, winning game one 2-1 before defeating the Battlers 4-1 in game two.

Frostburg got things going early in game one, as senior Sam Carver launched her first home run of the season with two outs in the first inning to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead. Senior Aliyah Ramey would get her big day started in the second inning, leading off the frame with a homer of her own to make it 2-0 Bobcats.

The Battlers' offense was held in check throughout game one by the pitching of first-year Sydney Theobald. AB's lone run of the game came in the bottom of the fourth, as a Presley McGee single scored Jordan Kenneally to make it 2-1. However, any chance of a two-out rally was thwarted after junior catcher Kennadie Batchelor threw out McGee trying to advance to second base.

Sophomore Shawna Leonard came on to pitch the seventh inning, earning the save by throwing a scoreless inning to preserve the one-run win.

Leonard turned right around and got the start in the circle in game two without missing a beat, retiring AB in order in the first inning.

Carver once again knocked home the first run of the game, this time on an RBI single that scored first-year Sierra Sanderson to make it 1-0 FSU.

The score stayed the same until the top of the fifth inning, when the Bobcats had two runners on and two outs. Ramey clubbed her second home run of the doubleheader, this one a three-run shot to give the Bobcats a 4-0 cushion.

Leonard was on the cusp of another shutout, as she had two outs and a runner on first in the bottom of the seventh. AB would scratch a run across on an RBI double by Hailee Culbertson that made it 4-1. Leonard would regroup, striking out Riley Vunak, who represented the tying run, to end the game.

The Bobcats are back on the diamond tomorrow afternoon as they travel to South Euclid, Ohio to face Notre Dame. The doubleheader begins at 1:00 p.m. For more information, visit frostburgsports.com.
