Grear Nabs 2nd Team All-MEC

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. --  Charleston swept the top honors as the Mountain East Conference released as the league announceds its men's tennis awards and all-conference teams on Friday. 

UC's John Giesberts was selected as the Player of the Year, while teammate Frantisek Pirek was tabbed as the Freshman of the Year. Golden Eagles coach Matt Santen was voted as the conference's Coach of the Year.

Giesberts, a junior from Burgdoff, Germany, went 10-2 overall this season with a perfect 6-0 record in conference play at No. 1 singles for UC. He's ranked No. 47 in the country in singles and has an 8-1 record inside the Atlantic Region. 

Pirek, a native of Prague, Czech Republic, went 8-3 overall this season and went 5-1 in conference play at No. 2 singles. posted a 4-2 in No. 1 doubles in the MEC. 

Santen is the MEC Coach of the Year for the first time in his career after guiding the Golden Eagles to the MEC regular season title. Charleston is also among the teams "under consideration" for a berth in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Tournament. The Golden Eagles are the No. 1 seed for this week's MEC Tournament to be played at Schoenbaum Courts in Charleston, W.Va. 

in addition to Giesberts and Pirek, UC's Marshall Dagostine also had a spot on the first team. Fairmont State's duo of Bartosz Losiak and Gui Pachane also earned first team honors, along with West Virginia Wesleyan's Carlos Dodero Fernandez and Taylor Papworth. West Liberty's Anton Shulz also had a spot on the first team.

The second team consists of Gianluca Gerndt (WLU), Origen Grear (FROST), Alvaro Legoinha (DE), Jake Magil (UC), Isfan Makhmudov (WLU), Alex Martinez (UC), Krish Patel (UC), Camillo Salvi (WVWC), Harry Simaioforidis (WVWC) and David Velayos (FAIR).

The All-MEC teams and awards are selected by a vote of the league's coaches.
