Bobcats Remain Unbeaten Defeating Lake Erie

PAINESVILLE, Ohio. – The Frostburg State men's lacrosse team won on the road Saturday afternoon, taking down the Storm from Lake Erie 12-11. The Bobcats were led by sophomore Tanner Donaldson with two goals and one assist, while junior Matt Sharkey recorded three caused turnovers and one ground ball.
 
The win moves Frostburg to 2-0 on the season, while the Storm fall to 0-2.
 
The Bobcats opened the scoring with a goal from junior Jake Bowman, which was assisted by junior Matthew Ward. Lake Erie answered with a goal to tie the game at the 9:37 mark in the first quarter. FSU scored back-to-back goals from Ward and graduate Mike Sipes to take a 3-1 lead. The Storm scored with 1:34 left in the quarter to decrease the deficit to 3-2.
 
Lake Erie come out of the first intermission scoring the next three goals to take a 5-3 lead over the Bobcats. Frostburg struck back with a goal at 5:04 in the second from junior Joey Boros, assisted by Donaldson. The Storm scored a dagger with two seconds left in the first half to take a 6-4 lead into halftime.
 
The Storm opened the third quarter with a goal to increase their lead to 7-4. The Bobcats answered with a goal from senior Nick Gallagher and a goal from Bowman that was assisted by sophomore Bubba Love. The Storm took a two-goal lead at 4:05 in the third quarter before Donaldson netted a Bobcat goal to put FSU down one going into the final quarter.
 
Lake Erie jumped ahead by three at 10-7 after scoring back-to-back goals to open the fourth quarter. Frostburg turned it on later in the quarter, outscoring the hosts 5-1 in the last six minutes of the game with goals from senior Jason Clinton, Donaldson, Gallagher, and two goals from graduate Paul Ruppert to secure the 12-11 win.
 
Senior Sam Natvig went 12-23 at the faceoff dot, while graduate Jack Marks earned the win for the Bobcats between the pipes, registering 16 saves on the afternoon. The defense was led by senior Dante York, with one caused turnover and one ground ball, while senior Colson Gregory recorded two caused turnovers for FSU.
 
Frostburg returns to action on Saturday, March 20 as they travel to New York to take on the St. Thomas Aquinas Spartans. Game time is set for 2:00 pm. For more information go to www.frostburgsports.com.
