FROSTBURG, Md. - The Frostburg State women's lacrosse team picked up their first victory of the season with a 19-11 victory over the Wilmington Wildcats on Saturday afternoon.
Frostburg got out to a very early lead less than a minute into the game, as senior Summer Cavey got the scoring going. Wilmington knotted the game up on a Maddie Day free-position goal. FSU then scored four straight goals to open up a 5-1 lead. Among the scorers were sophomores Cammie Schniedwind and Lilly Stephens, along with first-years Anna Kearney and Willow Walters, which was her first collegiate goal.
Wilmington would get a goal back through Taylor Lambeth before Frostburg scored back-to-back goals to open up a five goal lead at 7-2. Kearney set up a goal for senior Stephanie King before scoring a goal of her own. Wilmington then score twice in the last two minutes of the first half and again two minutes into the second half to cut the Bobcat lead to 7-5.
King settled the Bobcat nerves with back-to-back goals to restore a four goal advantage. Maris Allen got a goal back for the Wildcats before another three Bobcat goals made it 12-6 with 13 minutes remaining. The teams traded goals to get the score to 13-8 before another pair of FSU goals put the Bobcats up by eight. King scored her fifth of the day and junior Shelby Brunett scored her first goal of the season less than a minute later.
Wilmington got two goals back to get within five, but Frostburg shut the door on any comeback attempt with goals from Stephens and King. Wilmington would score with two minutes left before Stephens scored a goal with a minute left and senior Lindsay Kohlmann rounded out the senior day win with 30 seconds left to finish the score at 19-11.
The win gives FSU a 1-2 record on the year, while Wilmington loses their first game of the season to start 0-1. Frostburg returns to the Bobcat Stadium Wednesday, March 24, as they take on the Alderson Broaddus Battlers. Game time is set for 7 PM, for more information head to frostburgsports.com.
