Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Downed by Second Half Yellow Jacket Offense

INSTITUTE, W. Va.- The Frostburg State women's basketball team traveled to West Virginia State on Wednesday evening, falling by a final score of 68-55.

In the first quarter, the Bobcats got off to a good start with a jumper from sophomore Rhiana Hall. WVSU would catch up and take an 8-2 lead, but sophomore Brenae Ford would answer with a three-pointer. Junior Maggie Sharp would have a three of her own, and a jumper from Hall ended the first quarter with a score of 12-12.

In the second quarter, FSU started quickly with three-pointer from senior Morgan Dombroski. After a layup from junior Ciara Thomas, Dombroski would add another three to extend the Frostburg lead to 20-14. The Yellow Jackets fought back to tie the score at 20-20, then both teams traded baskets for much of the half. Sharp hit a three with 46 seconds left to put FSU up by three, but a WVSU bucket from Charity Shears took the sides into the half with Frostburg narrowly up 29-28.

In the third quarter, WVSU came out the gate making shots, giving them a nine-point lead at 38-29. A couple of layups from Thomas helped close the gap, then an and-one from Hall got FSU back within four at 40-36. Thomas and Sharp got back-to-back buckets, making it a one-point game at 43-42, but the Yellow Jackets used a couple of late threes to end the quarter with the lead at 49-42.

In the fourth quarter, foul trouble and cold shooting kept Frostburg from getting back into the game after another quick WVSU start, as the Bobcats couldn't get back within seven points in the quarter. Ultimately, The Yellow Jackets would take the victory with a score of 68-55.

Thomas, Hall, and Sharp would all end the night with a game-high 12 points. Senior Shelby Funchess would lead all players with 12 rebounds, a new Frostburg career best.

The Bobcats now have a record of 2-5 while the Yellow Jackets rise to 5-1. Frostburg will be back in action on Saturday, December 4 at 2 PM where they will face Charleston (WV) in Bobcat Arena. For more information and updates, visit www.frostburgsports.com
