Second Half Defense Propels Women's Basketball to Second Straight Win

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Basketball team won their second straight game, defeating Mansfield at home 57-43 on Monday evening.

The Bobcats started the scoring off with the first points of the game coming from junior Ciara Thomas. Both teams exchanged baskets until the Mountaineers took a 13-9 lead, scoring the last three points of the quarter.

Senior Morgan Dombroski opened the second quarter with a basket to cut the lead to two, then junior Maggie Sharp gave the Bobcats a spark coming off the bench, getting six quick points and putting FSU ahead 19-17. The last point of the quarter came at the line from junior Arianna Briggs-Hall as Mansfield took a narrow 25-24 lead going into the half.

Sophomore Rhiana Hall started out the second half by knocking down a jumper to give FSU the early 26-25 lead. Back-to-back buckets from Dombroski took the lead to four, which was then stretched to 37-30 after a Sharp three. Senior Shelby Funchess put up an and-one on offense and blocked a Mountaineer shot on the defensive side of the court to put the Bobcats up 42-32.

FSU entered the fourth with a nine-point lead and momentum from a well-played third quarter. The Mountaineers cut the lead to five with five minutes to go on a made three-pointer.  The Bobcats would shake of any attempt of a comeback with three straight baskets from Hall, Thomas, and Funchess to push the lead to 51-40, then finishing the game off strong and winning the contest 57-43, allowing just 18 second-half points.

Sharp led a balanced offense with 13 points, while Thomas joined her in double figures with 11. Briggs-Hall put in a solid defensive performance, grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds to go along with a block and two steals. Frostburg shot 11-13 from the foul line and outrebounded the Mountaineers 41-28, while shooting just over 40% from the field and holding Mansfield to 22.4%.

With the win, FSU improves to 2-5 on the year, while Mansfield falls to 1-4. The Bobcats return to play Wednesday, December 1 when they travel to play West Virginia State with a 5:30 PM tip-off. For more information on Frostburg visit frostburgsports.com.
