Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Second Half Comeback Falls Just Short in Women's Basketball Defeat

BUCKHANNON, W. Va.The Frostburg State women's basketball team traveled to Buckhannon, W. Va. to take on West Virginia Wesleyan in both teams' MEC opener, where FSU lost 73-67.

In the first quarter, both teams got off to rocky start, but FSU would battle back with a three-pointer from junior Maggie Sharp and some solid rebounding from junior Arianna Briggs-Hall and senior Shelby Funchess. Largely due to Frostburg foul trouble, WVWC would end the quarter on top 21-11.

In the second quarter, more free throws provided the majority of the scoring, with junior Ciara Thomas leading the way in drawn fouls. Senior Morgan Dombroski would also make some noise with some points of her own, but Wesleyan held strong, as the halftime score would be 40-30 in favor of WVWC.

Frostburg would start to mount a comeback in the third quarter, as some clutch threes from both Sharp and Dombroski, as well as another three from sophomore Rhiana Hall got FSU to within two at 53-51. Another Dombroski three gave Frostburg the lead at 54-53, but the quarter would end with WVWC in the lead by three points at 57-54.

In the final quarter, Wesleyan got some quick offense to take a 63-59 lead, then both teams went cold from the floor, going over three minutes without scoring. Dombroski broke the scoreless run, but WVWC immediately responded to maintain a four-point advantage. Frostburg wouldn't be able to generate enough offense in the final four minutes, as Wesleyan held on to their lead and used some late free throws to end up with the final 73-67 win.

With the loss, FSU falls to 0-4 while WVWC sees their early season record at 2-1. Frostburg's next opponent will be at home where they face Davis & Elkins on Tuesday, November 23 at 5:30 PM. For more information and updates, visit www.frostburgsports.com
