Football Earns MEC Championship with Landslide Win over Hilltoppers

FROSTBURG, Md – The Frostburg State football team defeated West Liberty 56-3 on Thursday night at Bobcat Stadium, a win which guarantees at least a share of the 2021 MEC Championship . The team honored 18 seniors and their hard work throughout their careers, as Lincoln Ikwubuo, Avery Thurman, Jake Broschart, Kyle Belack, Zae Giles, Carl Igweh, Trevor Booker, Malik Morris, Hauns White, Christian Thornton, Stacey Watts, Malcolm Facey, Nate Forte, Gavin Lavat, Jordan Hartman, Andrew Griffith, Chandler Breeden, and James Cogborn all competed in their final game in a Bobcat uniform.

Frostburg started the game quickly, scoring a touchdown on their first drive with a pass from redshirt freshman to Breeden on a well-run play action.

WLU would respond with a field goal to make the score 7-3 but would be shutout the rest of the way. The FSU defense played lights out as the Hilltoppers were held to just 51 yards rushing and only 250 total yards.

Junior Josh Maxwell then had the longest run on the day, scampering for a 65-yard touchdown to put the Bobcats up by two scores at 14-3. Just five minutes later, Giles took a quick flip from Walker and ran it in from nine yards out.

Morris then made his mark on the game, collecting a 25-yard touchdown to set the school's all-time receiving touchdown record. Right at the end of the first half, he then hauled in a 23-yard pass from Walker to set another record, this one being the school's all-time receiving yards in a career. Starting the second half, he continued the scoring with a 65-yard touchdown to cap off an eight-catch, 216-yard game.

Giles would get back in on the action, finding himself wide open in the endzone to make the score 49-3. Belack then scored on the longest play of the game, hauling in a 78-yard touchdown that also gave Walker the record for most touchdowns thrown in a single game with seven, ending the scoring at 56-3.

With the win, Frostburg ends the year at 10-1, while WLU finishes at 4-7. The victory means that FSU earns at least a share of the Mountain East Conference Championship in just their second full season at the Division II level. It is the third conference championship the team has won since the 2017 season.
