CUMBERLAND, Md. – Frostburg State led from the opening tip to the final horn in a dominating 96-64 win over Cheyney, Saturday.
The win is the third-straight for the Bobcats as they improve to 5-7 overall. The 96 points are the most for FSU since it scored 97 last season in an upset win over #24 Salisbury University.
Senior Daniel Alexander powered the Bobcats behind a career-high 36 points behind an impressive 12-of-14 shooting (85.7%). Alexander also led the team in assists (7), steals (4), and rebounds (8). Jasiah Perry was the only other starter in double figures with 13 points on 6-of-7 from the floor (85.7%).
Sophomore Jamil Jones and first-year Tyler Rodeheaver powered Frostburg's 36 points from the bench. Jones scored 14 points in 16 minutes of action with seven rebounds, while Rodeheaver notched 10 points in his first collegiate action.
FSU outrebounded Cheyney (1-13) 59-36 and turned 23 offensive rebounds into 23 points. The Bobcat defense also forced the Wolves into 21 turnovers.
First-year Desmond Renee connected on a three-pointer at the 13:07 mark in the opening half as Frostburg's early single-digit lead had ballooned to 16, 24-8. FSU pushed it to 20, 30-10 moments later when Perry hit a jumper at 10:03.
Cheyney cut it to 11, 33-22, on a three-pointer from Cliff St. Juste with 1:53 to play in the first but quick 11-2 run pushed FSU's lead back to 20, 44-24, at intermission.
FSU opened the second by keeping its lead above 20 and Alexander converted a traditional three-point play at 11:36 as the Bobcats led by 30, 71-41.
Alexander and Rodeheaver sandwiched layups around a Cheyney turnover inside the final eight minutes as FSU led by a game-high 42, 87-45. Jones later hit three throws with 49 seconds left to set the final at 96-64.
FSU returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Notre Dame (Ohio) at Allegany College at 7:30 pm.
