CUMBERLAND, Md. – Senior Daniel Alexander posted his fourth 30-point effort of the season as Frostburg suffered a 101-85 setback to Fairmont State on Sunday afternoon in MEC action.
Fairmont (13-4, 8-4 MEC) proved to be a strong team from the outset as it led by double figures before the midway point of the first half. Frostburg (7-11, 4-8 MEC) cut its first-half deficit to singles digits twice late in the half before trailing by 49-36 at the break.
The Falcons kept their lead in double figures the entire second half and they pushed their lead to 20, 79-59, with 7:17 to play in regulation. Fairmont led by 21 with 1:26 to play before the Bobcats closed the evening with the game's final five points to pull the final deficit to 16.
Alexander finished with 33 points, three shy of tying his career-best. He shot 13-of-19 from the field with four rebounds, four assists and four steals.
Sophomores Jamil Jones and Torrin Stephens each finished with 11 points, while Stephens posted a double-double when he snared 10 rebounds.
Alexander hit a traditional three-point play early in the first half for Frostburg's only lead of the afternoon. Jones later hit a three-pointer that pulled Frostburg to within eight, 23-15 with 9:40 showing in the first half.
A quick 6-0 scoring spurt starting at 6:06 led to the Bobcats cutting their deficit to single digits again. Maurice Carroll capped the outburst with a layup in traffic as the score read 34-25.
Przemyslaw Golek closed the half for the Falcons with a layup as time expired for a 49-36 advantage.
Carroll hit a layup just past the midway point of the second that pulled Frostburg to within 14, 71-57. However, a little over two minutes later and Fairmont led by 20, 79-59.
All five Fairmont starters finished in double figures as it was led by Kenzie Melko-Marshall with 22. Cole VonHandorf chipped in 21 points.
Frostburg returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Charleston at Allegany College of Maryland at 7:30 pm.
