LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. – For the second time in less than a week the Frostburg State volleyball team dropped Lincoln by a count of 3-0.
Last Friday night, the Bobcats opened their 2019 campaign with a 3-0 shutout of the Lions and on Tuesday, Frostburg defeated the hosts by scores of 25-13, 25-11, and 25-20.
The Bobcats hit .235 with 37 kills in their dominating three set win. Senior Biamba Tshitenge had nine kills on the night, while First-year Edwyna Lainez earned 14 assists on top of four aces. Two players hit double figures as senior Kathryn Lough had 12 digs and her classmate Cori Smothers recorded 11 digs.
An early run in the first set put Frostburg up 7-1. Sophomore Raven Pratt earned an impressive five kills in set one. The Bobcats closed out the set with a 5-0 run off a service ace from Smothers to win the opening set 25-13.
The Bobcats never trailed in set two and an early kill from sophomore Haley Altemus and a service ace from senior Bailey Godlove helped Frostburg to a 4-1 lead. A 9-2 run in the middle of the game saw FSU's lead balloon to 17-7 behind another two kills from Godlove and an ace from Lainez. The Bobcats closed the second with four-consecutive points as Tshitenge posted two late kills.
FSU rallied from a 10-9 deficit in set three with a run of six-straight points. Lainez posted two service aces and Godlove smacked a kill as part of the 6-0 run for the visitors. The Lions posted a rally of their own and trimmed the deficit to 16-15. The Bobcats answered one final time with a quick 4-0 jolt that put the match away.
FSU returns to action this weekend when it hosts the Frostburg Tournament. Frostburg opens action on Friday night with Bowie State at 6:00 pm.
