FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg volleyball team opened the 2019 FSU Tournament with a dominating 3-0 shutout of Bowie State, Friday night.
In a battle of the only Division II volleyball programs in the state of Maryland, FSU had no problem improving its record to 3-0 on the season after dispatching the Bulldogs (1-2) by scores of 25-8, 25-16 and 25-9.
All three of Frostburg's wins this season have come via the shutout and the Bobcats are hitting .234 thus far this fall.
FSU hit .321 against Bowie with 33 kills to just eight errors. Frostburg also collected nine service aces and 45 digs. Sophomore Haley Altemus hit .643 with nine kills to pace Frostburg's attack. Senior Biamba Tshitenge and sophomore Raven Pratt each finished with seven kills. First-year Edwyna Lainez recorded 17 assists as well as four service aces and senior Kathryn Lough tallied 16 digs for the Bobcats.
Frostburg rolled on Friday night in set one behind 10 kills and a .391 hitting percentage. The Bobcats closed out the set with an impressive 16-1 run.
The second set began with back and forth play before Frostburg went on a five point run to take a 13-7 lead in the set. Bowie continued to fight back but two services aces from Tshitenge and Lainez closed out the set for the Bobcats.
In the third set Frostburg recorded a remarkable .4 hitting percentage behind 12 kills. An 11-2 run in the middle of the set put the Bobcats in front 18-6. A kill from senior Bailey Godlove closed out the set and gave FSU the win.
The Bobcats open the second day of the tournament tomorrow with the University of the Sciences at 11:00 am.
