FROSTBURG, Md. – Seven different Frostburg women's lacrosse players scored on senior day Saturday in an 18-8 CAC loss to St. Mary's.
Sophomore Stephanie King scored once and handed out four assists and classmate Summer Cavey registered a hat trick for the Bobcats as they settle at 4-12 overall and 1-4 in the league.
Statistically speaking, the game was closer than the final score indicated as St. Mary's held a 30-23 advantage in shots and the visitors committed one more turnover than FSU (18-17).
Both teams finished with 14 draw controls and Frostburg was 15-of-19 on clears.
Seniors Morgan Cavey and Abigail McClure were honored prior to the opening draw and both turned in solid performances. Cavey finished with two assists, two ground balls and one draw control, while McClure stopped seven shots with one ground ball.
The Seahawks, who have spent much of the season ranked in the IWLCA Top 25 poll, tried to run away with the game as they jumped out to a 5-0 cushion 12 minutes into the game.
King scored FSU's first goal at 17:02 off an assist from Morgan Cavey as Frostburg narrowed the deficit to 5-1. Morgan Cavey dished out her second assist moments later when she found sophomore Lindsay Kohlmann at 13:09. King found sophomore Maggie Roszko for the Bobcats' final goal of the opening period at 10:27.
St. Mary's (9-7, 3-2) closed the opening half with five-straight goals for a 12-3 lead at intermission.
Bobcat first-year Shelby Brunett scored at 25:17 in the second and Summer Cavey connected on her first goal at 21:20 as Frostburg quickly grabed some momentum and trailed just 13-5.
The two squads traded goals the rest of the way. Junior Molly Biggers scored on a free-position at 13:41 and King found Summer Cavey at 10:47 to make the score 16-7.
Kohlmann found Summer Cavey for the game's final tally with 47 seconds left for the 18-8 final.
SMC was led in scoring by Caitlin Katchmar with two goals and six assists, while Sydni Thacker scored five times.
The Bobcats close out their regular season on Wednesday when they host No. 7 Mary Washington at 4:00 pm.
