Women’s Lacrosse Tussles With No. 9 UMW

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Frostburg State women's lacrosse team concluded its regular season slate with a 21-11 defeat at 11th-ranked Mary Washington.
 
The Bobcats finish their regular season at 4-13, 1-5 in Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) play. Frostburg has secured the sixth seed in the CAC Tournament. Meanwhile, Mary Washington captured the third seed in the CAC with a 14-3 record, 4-2 in league play.
 
After surrendering the first four goals of the contest, Frostburg worked its way back into the game with sophomore Wynnanne Walters tallying her first goal of the season to get the Bobcats on the board with 22:16 remaining in the half. Less than a minute later, senior Morgan Cavey scored FSU's second goal from an assist from sophomore Stephanie King. King capped the three-goal spurt to trim the deficit to 4-3 with 19:46 left in the first.
 
Mary Washington scored the next four goals to extend its lead back to five before Morgan Cavey's second goal of the day with 10:09 left in the half. Following three more UMW scores, King cashed in on an extra-man opportunity with 2:48 remaining. The nationally-ranked Eagles carried an 11-5 advantage into the halftime break.
 
King scattered three goals in the first 17 minutes of the second half. Walters and Morgan Cavey registered back-to-back goals with 8:23 and 6:11 left to bring the Bobcats to 10 goals on the day.
 
Walters found Morgan Cavey for the game's final goal with 2:29 remaining in regulation.
 
King paced the Bobcat offense with five goals and three assists. Walters turned in a career-best four-point day with two goals and two assists. Morgan Cavey scored four goals and grabbed four draw controls.  
 
Sophomore Lindsay Kohlmann caused three turnovers, collected three draw controls and four ground balls and an assist on the evening. Senior goalkeeper Abigail McClure made 13 saves in the contest.
 
As a team, the Bobcats shot 50%, with 11 of 22 shots finding the back of the net. The Bobcats earned four free-position shots, compared to three for UMW.
 
Frostburg will return to Mary Washington for the first round of the CAC Tournament on Saturday. A preview will be made available on Frostburgsports.com later in the week.
