Bobcats Take Two in Bel Air

BEL AIR, Md. – The Frostburg State baseball team swept its doubleheader against Eastern on Saturday afternoon at the Harford Sports Complex, taking game one, 10-9, followed by a 5-3 game two victory.

The sweep brings the Bobcats' record to 9-0 on the season, their best start since the College World Series team of 2015, when the team started 12-0. Eastern's record falls to 1-8 on the season.

Game One

The first game of the doubleheader proved to be a late-inning thriller with sophomore Jared Mouton taking a walk that brought in the winning run scored by sophomore Tre D'Amico.

Both teams were held scoreless, for the first three innings of action, as junior starter Mike Livingston allowed just one hit the first time through the order.

In the top of the fourth inning, Eastern earned the first runs of the game, after back-to-back RBI singles from Matt McHale and Liam Clarke gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead. Frostburg responded with six runs in the bottom of the frame, thanks in part to a pair of two-run doubles, the first off the bat of sophomore Jared Mouton, and the other from junior Jessie Hodge, giving Frostburg a 6-2 lead.

Eastern earned a run back in the top of the fifth, but the Bobcats responded again in the bottom half of the frame after Mouton again doubled home a run, making the score 7-3.

The Eagles stormed ahead in the sixth inning, after taking advantage of some errors made by the Frostburg defense. A RBI double from freshman Thomas Aguila brought the Eagles to within two and drove Livingston from the game. Two batters later, junior Britton Lawrence unloaded the bases with a three-run double, giving the Eagles an 8-7 lead.

The Eagles didn't allow a Bobcat hit for the next three innings and took a 9-7 lead into the ninth inning. The Bobcat half of the final stanza started with three consecutive singles, the third coming from D'Amico to drive in first-year Jack Maruskin and advancing Hodge into scoring position. The Eagles brought in Steve Sattanino to pitch and he struck out the following two Bobcats, all while the tying run is standing at third.

With two outs and a base open, the Eagles elected to walk senior Jason Paredes intentionally to load the bases. Sophomore Brett Fogle then worked a walk to bring home the tying run and Mouton followed that at bat with a walk of his own to plate the winning run, giving the Bobcats a 10-9 victory.

Hodge went 2-for-5 with two RBI's and a run scored. Mouton went 2-for-4 with four RBI. On the slab, Livingston threw 5.2 innings allowing two earned runs and recording three strikeouts. Junior hurler Chris Roosevelt got his second win of the season after throwing the final 2.1 innings and striking out six Eagles batters.

Game Two

The Bobcats struck first after D'Amico singled home Hodge, who walked and stole second to open the offense for Frostburg. FSU added two more in the opening inning to take an early 3-0 lead.

The Eagles responded with one run in the second inning after a leadoff double from Clarke was followed by an RBI single from Kyle Daddario.

FSU added another run after Fogle scored in the bottom of the third on a wild pitch to bring the Bobcat lead back to three runs. Fogle drove in his second run of the game in his next at bat, bringing home junior Mitch Fyffe on a sacrifice fly to centerfield.

In the top of the seventh the Eagles started to rally, getting their first three runners on base to lead off the final frame. Clarke drove in a run by getting hit by a pitch, and Daddario drove in another with a sacrifice fly to center. After a single from Eastern catcher Luke Gruendl loaded the bases again, senior hurler Travis Brashear struck out the final batter to earn the save in the 5-3 victory.

Sophomore pitcher Colby Lee, who transferred from Harford Community College after one season, returned to his old team's mound and pitched effectively, tossing 6.0 innings, allowing one run on six hits, and striking out nine to earn his second win of the year.

The Bobcats' next game will take place on Wednesday, March 13 on the road against Gallaudet. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. For up-to-date game information, including live stats, visit frostburgsports.com.
