CHESTER, Pa. – The Frostburg State men's lacrosse team extended its winning streak to six games, defeating Widener on the road, 12-11 on Saturday afternoon.
The win brings the Bobcats to 7-1 on the season, while Widener falls to 1-7.
Bobcat first-year Matthew Ward opened the scoring less than two minutes into action, taking a pass from senior Jake Howarth and depositing into the back of the net. Junior Michael Sipes quickly added another goal 47 seconds later, giving FSU an early 2-0 lead.
The Pride answered back, scoring five of the next six goals, including a man-down goal from senior Robbie Johnson to take a 5-3 lead.
With 7:14 left in the first half, the Bobcats worked their way back to tie the score at 6-6, after Sipes netted his second goal of the contest. Each team exchanged goals and went into halftime deadlocked at eight goals apiece.
Frostburg opened the second-half scoring, as junior Jimmy Lucas scored his 11
th goal of the season to give the Bobcats a 9-8 lead. Widener's Kyle Groark knotted the game up again after beating Bobcat junior goalie Jack Marks. The two squads entered the game's final frame tied at nine.
Widener jumped out to a two-goal lead in the fourth quarter, after Connor Heisman scored with 7:36 remaining in the game.
Facing a deficit, the Bobcats staged a comeback, scoring three goals in the game's final 7:14 to earn the 12-11 victory. Junior Paul Ruppert kick-started the rally, scoring his second goal of the game, followed by a goal from sophomore Jason Clinton with 6:27 to tie the game at 11. The game remained tied until junior Jordan Edwards netted the game-winner with 3:19 left, giving the Bobcats their sixth-consecutive win.
Edwards scored two goals on four shots for the Bobcats, Ruppert and Ward each ended up with four points, each scoring two goals and collecting two assists. Marks stopped 17 shots on his way to his seventh win of the season.
The Pride were led by Heisman, who scored three goals on six shots. Widener held a 51-38 shots advantage over FSU, but the two teams each had 28 shots on goal. The teams were even in faceoffs as well, as each team won 13.
The Bobcats will return to action on the road on Tuesday, March 26 when they take on Elizabethtown. The initial faceoff will take place at 4:30 p.m. For more information, visit frostburgsports.com.
