MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – For the second-straight day, the Frostburg softball team collected a pair of wins at its spring break trip to Myrtle Beach, Monday afternoon.
The Bobcats push their overall record to 7-5 with victories over Southern Vermont, 14-3 in 5 inn., and Maine Presque Isle, 3-1.
Sophomore Emily Moll picked up her first win of the spring in the circle after she struckout seven, walked two and allowed just two earned runs in the fifth and final inning.
Moll retired the side in the first and second innings and didn't allow a hit until the second batter of the third inning. She also retired the side in the fourth before allowing three runs in the fifth.
At the plate, Frostburg took control early on with a nine-run first inning. Senior Olivia Ford singled to lead off the frame and scored the first run courtesy of an error on the Southern Vermont infield.
First-year Amber Keene, sophomore Taylor McCarty and junior Katelyn Mehrling, tripled, doubled and singled home runs, respectively as FSU surged to a 4-0 lead. First-year Erica Payne later tripled home both junior Gabby Sandy and sophomore Aliyah Ramey.
The Bobcats tacked on three runs in the home half of the second. Ramey doubled to lead off and scored on a sacrifice fly from Sandy. Payne singled home sophomore Sam Carver and Keene doubled home Ford.
The Bobcats' final two runs came in the third when Ramey singled home Moll, while Payne doubled down the left field line allowing Ramey to cross home plate.
Payne paced the offense with four RBI and a run scored, while Keene drove in three and scored once. The win over Southern Vermont marked the third-straight game for Frostburg with 10 or more runs.
FSU posted a 3-1 victory over Main Presque Isle in the second game behind a complete game three-hitter from Mehrling in the circle. She fanned three, allowed just one earned run in the fourth and didn't allow a base runner in the first, second, third, fifth and sixth innings.
Frostburg managed just four hits over the first four innings, while Maine scored on a run-producing ground out in the top of the fourth for a quick 1-0 lead.
The Bobcats rebounded with two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth. Following a pitching change for the Owls, Keene doubled home junior Claire Hanlon and Payne as FSU led 2-1. In the sixth, Hanlon singled to left that scored Payne for the 3-1 final.
Frostburg has tomorrow off but returns to the field with a doubleheader against Salem on Wednesday starting at 9:30 am.
