MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Frostburg State softball team dropped a doubleheader on Wednesday to Salem, 10-3 in the first contest and 9-0 in five innings during the second game.
First-year Amber Keene drove in two runs and sophomore Taylor McCarty plated the other run in the opening game of the day. The Bobcats (7-7) struck first in the top of the first when McCarty singled home junior Claire Hanlon for a 1-0 lead.
The Spirits answered in the bottom of the first with five runs that were highlighted by a home run from Breanna Herman.
FSU scored two in the third to narrow the gap to 5-3 as Keene homered to left field that scored Hanlon.
However, Salem tacked on three runs in the home half of the third and two more in the sixth.
McCarty was saddled with the loss as she allowed eight runs, three earned, on six hits in 2.1 innings of work.
In the second contest, the Spirits plated five runs in the third and four more in the fifth to end the game after the bottom of the fifth.
Hanlon led the Bobcats with two hits, while Keane, junior Katelyn Mehrling and first-year Erica Payne each had one. Mehrling also took loss in the circle as she allowed nine runs, three earned, on eight hits in four innings pitched.
Frostburg closes out its spring break trip tomorrow with Sarah Lawrence at 9:30 and St. Louis College of Pharmacy at 11:30 am.
