FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg men's lacrosse team collected 6-0 scoring runs in both the first and second halves en route to a 14-4 win over Shenandoah, Tuesday.
The win is the third straight for the Bobcats and pushes their record to 4-1. During the current winning streak, Frostburg is outscoring its opponent by nearly seven goals per game.
In the victory over the Hornets, Frostburg trailed 1-0 just 1:09 into the first quarter before the hosts rattled off a run of six-straight for a 6-1 lead at intermission.
Junior Michael Sipes scored an unassisted tally at 10:10 in the first that kick started the outburst for Frostburg.
First-year Matt Ward, the current CAC Offensive Player of the Week, gave the Bobcats the lead for good with an unassisted goal at 5:55. Sipes (1:50) and junior Jordan Edwards (00:16) closed the first quarter with a 4-1 cushion.
In the second quarter, junior Paul Ruppert found sophomore Jason Clinton at 4:37 and Ward scored again at 3:09 to close the opening half of play.
Shenandoah (5-2) opened the second half with the first two goals that narrowed its deficit to 6-3, but FSU collected another 6-0 jolt for a 12-3 lead midway through the fourth. Junior Jimmy Lucas scored back-to-back goals at 4:48 and at 1:04 before Ward closed the third with a goal for a 9-3 advantage.
First-years Jake Bowman (7:14) and Noah Roark (5:41) accented the fourth quarter as Roark's goal is the first of his career.
Ward again led the Bobcats in scoring with five points behind three goals and a pair of assists. Sipes added two goals and one assist, while five different Bobcat players contributed two points.
On defense, sophomore Garrett Colvin scooped up five ground balls and caused two turnovers, while junior Dante York added four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
The Bobcats outshot the Hornets 55-31 and held the visitors to just 14-of-26 successful clears.
Michael Brooks scored the game's first goal that gave SU the early lead and finished the afternoon with one goal and one assist.
Frostburg returns this Saturday when it hosts Goucher at 2:00 pm.
