Ruppert & Sipes Power Frostburg In Win Over Goucher

FROSTBURG, Md. – The junior tandem of Michael Sipes and Paul Ruppert combined for 12 points to power the Frostburg men's lacrosse team to a 16-6 win over Goucher, Saturday.
 
Frostburg has now won four straight with the win over the Gophers and the Bobcats sit at 5-1 overall. Meanwhile, the loss ends a four-game winning streak for Goucher as it settles at 4-4.
 
Sipes and Ruppert each finished the afternoon with five goals and one assist each and are career-highs for both players in goal and points.
 
Senior Jake Howarth and first-year Matthew Ward added on four points apiece and Frostburg used a 6-2 scoring advantage in the second quarter for the win.
 
FSU led 4-2 after the opening quarter thanks to two goals from Sipes during the first 15 minutes. The Bobcats took control with the first six tallies of the second quarter.
 
Ward scored at 12:39, senior Nick Mattis found Ruppert for a man-down goal at 10:44 and Ruppert scored at 6:10 as FSU extended its cushion to 8-3.
 
The run continued at 3:21 when Ruppert found Sipes and Frostburg's goal total hit 10 when sophomore Jason Clinton connected with Howarth for a man-up goal 21 seconds later.
 
Goucher's Jared Heath scored the final goal of the opening half with 1:50 to play to pull the visitors to within 10-4.
 
Howarth found Sipes for a man-down goal just 32 seconds into the third quarter and Sipes returned the favor at 10:13 when he assist a Ruppert goal as Frostburg increased its advantage to 12-4.
 
Sipes closed the third with a goal and Ward found Ruppert for Frostburg's first goal of the fourth at 13:02.
 
Senior Kyle Kinney secured his spot in the final stats when he found the net twice in the fourth frame. Howarth found Kinney at 10:14 for a man-up goal following an illegal participation penalty and junior Jake O'Flahavan handed out an assist to Kinney for the game's final score at 2:47.
 
Despite the lopsided win, Frostburg narrowly outshot Goucher 50-46 and held a narrow 16-15 lead in saves. The Bobcats won 15-of-25 faceoffs while the defense stifled the Gophers into a 0-for-7 afternoon on extra-man opportunities.
 
Junior Jack Marks got the win in goal for Frostburg after playing nearly 47 minutes and recording 11 saves. Sophomore Cory McAndrews played the final 13:02 and saved five shots.
 
Evans and Zephan Harnish each finished with three points for the Gophers.
 
Frostburg returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts McDaniel at 3:00 pm.
