WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Frostburg softball team made the most of its weekend schedule changes by collecting wins over Rhode Island College and Gallaudet, Saturday.
The Bobcats were supposed to compete in the Beach Blast in Virginia Beach, however, rainy weather forced the cancelation of the tournament. Instead, the Bobcats defeated Rhode Island 13-5 in six innings and followed it up with a 9-5 victory over the Bison.
The Bobcats plated three runs in each of the first three innings against the Anchormen (1-1). Rhode Island rebounded with three runs in the third and two in the fourth before FSU closed the game with four runs in the sixth.
First-year Amber Keene doubled home senior Olivia Ford to start the game's scoring in the home half of the first.
During the nine-run outburst over the first three innings, junior Katelyn Mehrling drove in two, Ford scored twice and junior Claire Hanlon knocked in two.
Keene also finished the run for the Bobcats when she scored on a wild pitch for the 9-3 lead.
RIC scored its two runs in the fourth on a double from Emma Simmons before Frostburg closed out the contest in the sixth.
Keene homered to lead off the inning, junior Gabby Sandy singled in sophomore Kat Treff and sophomore Taylor McCarty and Carver singled in first-year Erica Payne for the 13-5 win.
Mehrling collected her second win in the circle this spring as she fanned two and scattered seven hits.
Six of Frostburg's nine batters finished with two RBI, while six batters finished with two or more hits.
In the victory over Gallaudet, the Bobcats plated a run in five of the seven innings and never trailed in the contest.
Ford scored the game's first run on a wild pitch in the first inning and sophomore Aliyah Ramey doubled home Keene for a 2-0 lead. Carver doubled home Treff in the second and Treff stole home for the first run of the fourth inning. Ford made it 5-0 Frostburg when she scored on a wild pitch.
The Bison evened the game at 5-5 after the hosts scored five runs in the fifth, but the Bobcats closed the door with three runs in the sixth and their final run in the seventh.
Keene and McCarty tripled home runs in the sixth, Mehrling singled home another in the sixth and sophomore Shylo Arneson scored on a bases loaded walk in the seventh.
