MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Frostburg State softball team ran its winning streak to four games with a pair of wins on the first day of its spring break trip to Myrtle Beach, Sunday.
Frostburg improves to 5-5 overall with wins over Sarah Lawrence, 16-5 in 5 inn., and Principia 17-0 in 5 inn.
Junior Claire Hanlon, sophomore Aliyah Ramey and first-year Amber Keene all drove in three runs to power FSU at the plate in the win over SLC.
The Bobcats plated two runs in the first inning behind a run–producing single from Keene, who later scored on an error.
FSU pushed its lead to 8-1 following six runs in the second. First-year Erica Payne scored the first run on an error before Hanlon smacked a single to center field that scored three runs thanks to an error on the Sarah Lawrence outfield. Sophomore Katelyn Mehrling followed it up with an RBI double before Ramey singled home Mehrling for the final run.
After a scoreless third frame, the Bobcats closed the afternoon with eight runs in the fourth. Keene tripled to lead off the inning, Ramey posted a two-run single and Keene later doubled home two more.
Sophomore Taylor McCarty allowed two unearned runs and scattered five in 3.0 innings of work for the win. Frostburg finished the first game with 15 hits, eight of which went for extra bases.
In the win over Principia, Mehrling tossed a no-hitter to highlight the dominating shutout. Mehrling's no-hitter is the first for a Bobcat since April of 2017 and is the eighth in the program's history. Mehrling fanned three batters and gave up just one walk in the win on Sunday afternoon.
McCarty and Carver each drove in four runs and the Bobcats took advantage of 10 errors committed by Principia. McCarty also scored four runs, while Ramey drove in three.
Frostburg scored four runs in both the first and second innings, tacked on five in the third and closed the contest with four in the fifth.
McCarty was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the first inning for the first run, while three more runs crossed on an error by the Principia pitcher. In the second, two runs scored on an error by the outfield, while in the third, McCarty singled home two and Carver plated sophomore Shylo Arneson with a sacrifice fly.
In the fifth and final frame, sophomore Emily Moll, Ramey, Carver and sophomore Carly Wirth all drove in solo runs.
Frostburg returns to action tomorrow against Southern Vermont at 11:30 am and Maine Presque Isle at 1:30 pm.
