FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State women's basketball team defeated Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) foe York (Pa.) for the first time since 2015 and junior Victoria Diggs notched her 1,000
th point in the 56-44 victory on Thursday evening.
The victory propels the Bobcats to 15-8 overall and 7-6 in CAC play. The Spartans fall to 11-13 and 6-7 in conference action. The Bobcats sit tied for the third-place with Salisbury, with the Sea Gulls coming to town Saturday for the regular-season finale.
Diggs made history as the 19
th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point plateau, doing so in her third season on the team. She sliced through the defense and scored a layup in the waning seconds of the first half to secure the milestone.
Junior Amanda Emory helped cement the win on the historic evening, outscoring York 17-16 in the second half on her way to 25 points and seven rebounds for the game.
The Bobcats stymied York's second-ranked scoring offense, holding the Spartans to a season-low 44 points on 18-of-62 shooting (29.0%). The Bobcats outscored York in every quarter, limiting the Spartans to single digits in the third and fourth quarters.
Senior Megan Kelly set the tone for the Bobcats in the first quarter, connecting on three three-pointers, that last of which handed Frostburg a 17-14 lead at the end of the frame.
In the second quarter, an eight-point Spartan spurt handed York its largest lead of the game at 24-21 with 3:31 left in the first half. The Bobcats responded with seven-consecutive points: four from Emory and three from Diggs. In the final moments of the first half, Diggs reached her career milestone and secured a 32-28 halftime lead.
York opened the third quarter with a 9-2 run, opening up a 37-34 advantage. However the Bobcats responded by scoring the final 11 points of the quarter and holding the Spartans without a point for over seven minutes. Emory scored nine consecutive points during the run and accounted for 11 of the Bobcats' 13 in the quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Bobcats opened up their largest lead of the game when Kelly knocked down her fourth three-pointer of the evening to put FSU ahead 54-40 with 4:16 remaining. First-year Drew Dunathan grabbed three offensive rebounds in the final four minutes of regulation to help salt the game away.
Kelly finished with a dozen points and Diggs had seven points and seven rebounds. Junior Victoria Yoder added six points and three steals.
The Bobcats host in-state rival Salisbury on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. with the third seed in the CAC Tournament on the line. Since joining the CAC in 2010-2011, Frostburg State has never hosted a conference tournament game.
