FROSTBURG, Md. – Senior Edwin Cole reached the 1,000-point milestone for his career as the Frostburg State men's basketball team endured an 82-67 loss at the hands of York (Pa.) in CAC action, Thursday night.
The Bobcats settle at 10-14 overall and 6-7 in the league, while York improves to 18-6 and 11-2.
Cole entered the night needing 20 points to reach 1,000 and his final basket of the ballgame, a two handed dunk, came with 2:12 to play to give him 21 points on the night and 1,001 for his career.
Cole is the 20
th player in the 77-year history of the program to reach the plateau and he did so with his seventh 20-point effort of the season. He also posted 14 rebounds, three blocks and a steal.
Cole scored 12 of his 21 in the first half as the Bobcats opened up a 35-31 lead at intermission.
FSU led by eight, 11-3 on a junior Jordan Dawson layup just 4:30 into the game. First-year Bo Schene picked off a pass at 9:09 and raced to the basket for a fast break layup seconds later and a 10-point cushion, 27-17.
Cole hit a layup with 1:32 to play in the first half and Dawson hit a late free throw for the four-point lead at the break.
York opened the second half with a three-pointer and moments later, the visitors led by four, 41-37. FSU battled back to tie the game on another Schene layup at 13:37 and Cole hit a jumper at 13:08 to tie tings at 47.
The Spartans quickly pushed their lead into double digits with a 6-0 spurt just before the 10-minute mark of the second half. Jared Wagner hit two free throws for a 15-point lead at 7:31 and Frostburg cut the deficit to 70-63 on a junior Lawrence Pettis layup at 3:16.
York was able to increase its lead back to 15 at the final horn. The visitors outscored FSU 51-32 over the final 20 minutes.
Cole was the lone Bobcat in double-figures as Pettis and senior Zachary Coleman each scored seven. Junior Demetrich Williams came off the bench to match Pettis and Coalmon with seven.
The Spartans finished with three players in double figures and were led in scoring by Jason Bady. Wagner added 20.
Frostburg returns to action on Saturday when it celebrates Senior Day against Salisbury at 3:00 pm.
