Late Runs Catapult Volleyball To Victory

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – Frostburg State bounced back with a 3-1 victory at West Virginia Wesleyan Saturday morning. FSU won the first, second, and fourth sets by scores of 25-19, 25-22, and 25-19, respectively.

Despite falling behind early, Frostburg State rattled off the final seven points of the first set to claim victory. FSU was propelled from five service aces in the opening set, including three from first-year player Jackie Sterenberg.

The second set was a back-and-forth affair, with Frostburg State falling behind 22-15 after West Virginia Wesleyan recorded three consecutive service aces and FSU called a timeout. The timeout was what Frostburg needed to go on a 10-0 run and take the second set.

After dropping the third set, FSU bounced back in the fourth frame. The visitors hit an impressive .406 in the final set on 16 kills compared to just three errors.

Sterenberg led Frostburg with a dozen kills, 13 digs, and a quartet of aces, three of which came in the first set. Fellow first-year player Edwyna Lainez also notched her second consecutive double-double with 29 assists and 12 digs. Senior Biamba Tshitenge added nine kills and a team-best three blocks.

The win moves Frostburg State to 11-14 on the year, matching last season's win total, and a 3-10 Mountain East Conference mark.

The volleyball team returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Fairmont State for the final road match of the season. Tip-off is slated for 6:00 p.m.
