Swimming Opens MEC Play

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The Frostburg State swimming teams were swept by West Virginia Wesleyan in the first MEC meet of the year, with the women losing 140-53 and the men falling 123-81.
 
The women won one event on the afternoon, while the men claimed three events thanks to the efforts of junior Sawyer Conklin.
 
The lone victory came from the efforts of first-year swimmer Ana Hughes in the 100-yard freestyle (1:03.64). Hughes also was a part of the second place finish in the 400-yard medley relay (4:38.51) with classmate Rayna Cicen, senior Megan Culbertson, and sophomore Aubree Morris. Hughes also finished in second in the 50-yard freestyle.
 
In addition, junior Megan Hendershot took home silver in the 1,000-yard freestyle (12:58.39) and 200-yard breaststroke (3:00.67), and Morris earned a second place finish in the 200-yard butterfly (2:38.78).
 
On the men's side of the meet, Conklin won both the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyle events (5:17.12 and 10:52.29 respectively) and was an integral part of FSU's 800-yard freestyle relay with junior Anthony Giuseppetti, sophomore Adam Stein, and junior Brady Peterson (7:43.24), squeaking out second place by .05 seconds.
 
The men had a myriad of second place finishes during Saturday's meet. First-year Quincy Page edged out second place by .05 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle (23.78), sophomore Jacob Tantalla notched second in the 100-yard freestyle (55.06), first-year Matt Costa-Shell finished as the runner-up in the 200-yard backstroke (2:20.13), and Stein finished behind Conklin in the 500-yard freestyle (5:18.37).
 
The swimming teams have a two-week hiatus before taking part in the Yellow Jacket Invitational at Randolph-Macon College on Saturday, November 23.
